COVER MYSTERY

I had thought this old Spanish cover art was a 'inspired' by the Last Starfighter [below] but I'm not so sure now at all. What do you think readers?

INTO THE BLACK HOLE

Having a bit of lazy Sunday afternoon  and thought I'd re-watch the cult 1979 Disney sci-fi flick, The Black Hole.

I remember watching it when it first came out at the cinema and thinking it's a bit like 20,000 leagues in Space, although I suppose as it has that metaphysical ending  maybe I should have called it 2001 leagues in Space.

What ever I still find it an enjoyable film, and would love it if MPC re-released their huge USS Cygnus kit. I do, however have a couple of small items of Black Hole merchandise which I'm happy to own, thanks to our mega blog friend, Arto, who sent me this V.I. N. CENT bottle opener and Maximillian key ring  as my Christmas present one year.

So time to settle down and join the crew of the USS Palomino as it approaches The Black Hole....

I found my Eagle Annuals. In flipping through Number 8 which I think was 1957/58 I came across these nice SF illustrations so thought I would share them with you.

#3 is a moon rocket that may carry a nuclear warhead, hardly Dan Dare

OJ in Space

Its turning into a good month for vintage space books as we run up to the 50th anniversary of the Lunar Landing! One of the most recent and certainly the smallest is a dinky little booklet given away free with Sunfresh fruit juice.

Sunfresh isn't a brand a I recall, but the booklets publishers, Odhams are a very well respected British publisher, who were very popular in the sixties. The little 36 page book is only about 3" long and would probably have been either attached to the label on the bottle, or been a mail-away. Inside, its dated 1967 and it covers Gagarin's famous achievement, before focussing more on the Mercury and Gemini missions, with a little about the nascent Apollo programme. In fact Saturn 1 is the closest we get to the launch vehicle with a very stylised Apollo/LEM combination on the cover.

The last panel is the most interesting, as it shows a good looking wheel space station. The scans are a little wobbly, as the rusting staples have foxed the paper, making it a little fragile to open out fully.

HOVERING IN TWILIGHT

Just checking my old phone photo archive I found this from a years back.

HOME MADE MOON BUGGY: HALF WAY THERE

The project has started and my version of the Moon Buggy is taking shape.

Some zip fasteners will come in handy.

A little bit of glueing.

And the thing so far.

I had to add a backpack to the pilot as he didn't have a back when I took him off his go-kart! He looks like Boba Fett now!

The engine is a clothes peg spring.

The decal is my own crude design from the stickers I had to hand.

The zip fasteners have become the front foot rests.

More Moon Buggy mayhem to follow when I get my balls from China!

HOME MADE MOON BUGGY EXTRAS

Looking for a silver engine part I found this perfume spray nozzle on the ground at work. 

Its an interesting shape but too big I think.

The spring inside maybe the answer. I just need a thicker tighter one.

The other parts of the Buggy include the pilot's chair and wheel axles among other things.

The orange chair could be made from lego bits perhaps or I have some small red bricks. 

The Fat Controller approves!
