Atomic Toy Reactor? Really?

The plutonium drives of Voyager 1 and 2 remind me of an amazingly risky toy.

I've never owned one. Don't think I was born soon enough.

I'm talking about Gilbert's toy nuclear reactor cum energy lab!

As far as I know it came with tiny grains of plutonium! Really?

Holy moly! Anyone ever seen one or maybe even owned one?

How on earth did it work?

Won't Get Thuled Again

Well it was worth the wait, after a momentous journey, New Horizons probe has arrived at Ultima Thule in the distant Kuiper Belt. Images are only now beginning to arrive and the first clear image reveals two asreoidal bodies fused together like a giant snowman!

More images will arrive as the probe speeds onward into deep space and whilst we wait  Osiris Rex silently orbits Bennu plotting the landing which will retrieve material to send back to Earth in a pod. Who says the space race is over?

Added 03/01/19 - China has just landed a rover on the lunar farside!

TERRAHAWKS HUDSON

One of the lesser known vehicles of the Anderson universe, at least to me, the Hudson Rolls Royce from Terrahawks would make an interesting addition to any collection.

Thunderbirds Were Go

Back in 1993 when my daughter was interested in collecting baseball cards there was a boom in collectable cards. You may remember The Avengers, Steed & Mrs Peel cards from that era that I sent to the blog. 

I saw these then, luckily no stinking gum, just picture cards from Topps. These were imported to the US from the Republic of Ireland and this is the only pack I bought as I thought at $1.25 this would be an expensive undertaking to try collecting the full set. They may only have been available from Comic Book retailers as I think I bought these at NYC's Forbidden Planet store. 

As the cards credit the models and photography to Martin Bower I'm not sure that they were from the actual TV show. 

Anyway, I gave this card set a miss. Maybe other blog readers have them all?

YELLOW BLASTOFF

Being a fan of Billy Blastoff since I got my own one Christmas years ago in the mid-Sixties I am always checking in on the little fella.

So I was interested when I saw this Japanese Billy Blastoff set last year on Yahoo Japan.

Japanese kids and collectors seem to love Billy too and there are a range of Billy sets and toys in Japan.

This struck me as unusual as it has a yellow crawler.

I'm pretty sure they're usually white or grey in Western sets. Its even grey on the Japanese box pictured.

Have you seen a yellow one?

A NEW JERSEY NEW YEAR

Hi, and a happy New Year to the crew at Moonbase Central.

I am grudgingly planning to take down the tree and decorations in a few days, but before I do that, I have put on some new ornaments given me by loved ones who really know how to make me smile.

Here's 2 Hallmark ornaments based on Hanna Barbera characters Scooby Doo and Dick Dastardly in his Mean Machine.

Also, a gorgeous hand blown glass Narwal. 

Perfectly eclectic additions to my perfectly eclectric tree.
