Rob's Dad's Airliner Postcards

For Fathers Day, I went through some of my dad’s papers, and came across a stack of postcards he sent me over the years from some of his business travels in the 1960s.

The most interesting group to me were about a dozen postcards showing the airliners he flew in, to various parts of the world.

I thought it would be fun to caption them with the airplane “make-and-model” and send them along. To me, it’s a good example of another “lost” world - world travel for business - although I’m sure it still happens to this day.

3D lenticular Space Postcard

I used to often look at Modern Fred's Flickr stream years ago. Just found him on Pinterest and as usual he's got some great images.

I love this lenticular card. Would you say those are GI Joe's? Is the spacecraft a model kit?

Lenticular Soup! A Birthday Bowl

 Always fascinating, we've seen lenticular postcards on MC a few times. The larger cousins of flicker ring pics, these beautiful mementoes of a bygone card-writing age are a delight.

Here are a few I've spotted on auction this year.

WE'RE MOBILE

I've always liked this NASA MOLAB design. This postcard was on auction so I saved the pic. Here it is trundling through the barren wastes of the Northern Arizona desert way back when.

I've never seen a toy version of this in the flesh. I think there may have been designs but nothing produced.

POCKET MONEY POSTCARDS BY TONY K

These are my pocket money purchased sci fi art postcards, from the 1970s.

I found them upstairs in an obscure shop. They were displayed on a rotating rack.

I accumulated them over three consecutive Saturdays.

They reminded me of the sort of art I was drawn to - stuff by Chris Achilleos, Frank Frazetta and Boris Vallejo.

There were quite a few other sci fi and fantasy postcards featuring designs by other genre artists of the day.

I'd like to have picked up more, but was restricted by my hard earned pound-a-week income.

Readers' Collectables: Memories of an Old Postcard by Tony K

I collect WW1 photo-postcards because I find them haunting.

For me, many reach out at an emotional level, showing wives, sweethearts, parents, brothers, best friends and pals; the human consideration of the war. 

They're sepia shaded strangers with familiar faces that resonate from the past. 

I find myself wishing them well as I wonder who they were and what became of them!
