Slim Pickins down Cas Car Boot: Transformers and Scalextric

 It was the annual massive Bank Holiday Castleford Rugby Club car boot today.

The Missus bought tons for the Grandkids. My own was a rather meagre haul.

The Scalextric bundle was a fiver. I've no idea of it's age but it looks displayable. The Mercedes SL has been daubed with varnish, which has turned an awful brown. See what you think.

The black car is a Gen 1 Hasbro Transformer, ID yet to be ascertained. It was two whole pounds and will go in the Transformers cabinet.

Any good?

CARRERA JET SETS: I WANT ONE!

 Wholly new to me, here's the Carrera Aerial Jet set, a sort of monorail race toy, which is so cool its untrue.

The box art of this set is fabulous with its glowing shot of the racing jets.

Looking a lot like a Scalextric set inside, with that thick polystyrene tray, I suppose Carrera can be seen as a slot car type toy. I'm sure I've seen Carrera racing car layouts.

For spaceniks like us there was also a Carrera Jet Apollo set!

The box art is a bit minimalist I feel.

I love the Apollo capsule and the grey moon globe! Reminds me of other space toys with moons!

Lincoln International released this amazing Snowmobile race slot set, which I saw on Worthpoint.

What a fabulous idea and very James Bond!

Snow and action just went together back in the 007 Sixties and this will have tapped right into that vibe.

SCOOBY DOO MEETS BATMAN SLOT CAR SET

Hi,

I get emails from AutoWorld covering kits, die-casts, and slot-cars. The latter do not usually interest me, but this set looks like fun. Scooby-Doo Meets Batman Electric Racing Slot Car Set, in HO scale.

There is 18 feet of two-lane slot car track - 18 ft of Spooktacular Racing Fun. There is a cardboard stand-up backdrop, a Scooby loop, two squeeze tracks, and glow in the dark track graphics.

Two vehicles are included. The Scooby Doo Mystery Machine van, which does not include any figures; and a 1966 Cartoon Series Batmobile, in dark blue, with figures of Batman and Robin. This is a cartoon version of the 1966 live-action Batmobile, which did actually appear in a couple of 1970s episodes of Scooby Doo. Both vehicles are available separately, and not just in this set.

The US retail price is listed as $189.99, so it is an expensive set, but there is plenty in the box. This site shows the contents of the box in detail.

It seems there have been a number of both Batman and Scooby Doo slot car sets, in various scales, by different companies over the years.

               Another You Tube find. A slot car layout for heavy trucks. The basic toy seems to be by Tyco. The layout is amazing, with many operating features. Trucks load and unload. The car transporter is pure magic. There is also a night run, with full lighting. I love this.

CAPTAIN SCARLET TRIANG PURSUIT SLOT CAR SET: RON TURNER BOX ART? REALLY?

I was interested in this listing on an old Worthpoint sale. I may have posted it before but its the line about the box artists that caught my eye this time round. is it really Ron Turner? Anyone know?

Here's the listing and the box - "This Captain Scarlet slot car racing set is one of the rarest of the Gerry Anderson toys and an absolute gem, in amazing condition for being made almost 50 years ago. Made in England by Triang Rovex, it consists of a gray plastic track that clips together and two Spectrum Patrol Cars, one red and one yellow, which race against each other. Car bodies clip to chassis and are battery operated with "touch" to start and "touch" to stop. Includes the tiny "T" shaped pullers which attach to the chassis and keep the cars in the slots of the track. Instructions are on the box. Cars and track are in excellent working condition, box shows a little wear and tear but it sound. Plastic covering over "windows" has been carefully replaced (a long time ago) and there are a few tape repairs to the edge of the box, but it is overall in solid condition. Brilliant box art by Ron Turner!"

Scalextric No Time To Die Slot-car Set

Further to the wonderful No Time To Die James Bond layout from Lewis Morley, here is an item from You Tube showing the basic Scalextric set. 

The Micro No Time To Die set is 1/64th scale, and contains both an Aston Martin DB5 and a Jaguar XF (obviously the villain car, in James Bond only the bad guys drive Jaguars). With a about four metres of track, including a loop. 

The instructions give several different possible tracks layouts. This set is battery powered, but a mains controller is also available, as are additional track lengths, or you could use track from other Scalextric micro sets.

THE NAME'S SET. ROAD RACE SET.

Looey from Oz explains: A short while ago, whilst I was still basking in the glow of finally getting my long coveted Bandai Captain Scarlet SPC, you posted a piccie of the Triang Rovex Captain Scarlet chase set and asked if this was the ultimate "wish I had this" set.

And I thought, no, if I was going for a slot car set, it would be this one...

Which of course set me on seeing what one would cost me these days. And the answer is STUPID MONEY (probably about a thousand quid in your money) and of course, they were always notorious for not working properly, so messing around with a vintage toy really put me off.

Then I discovered Scalextric had released a reasonably priced MICRO set featuring the classic Aston Martin and I HAD to have it!

When I received it, was really nice, but it didn't have enough track to do what I wanted to do, so I found a used Batman set very reasonably priced on eBay and soon I had enough roadway to recreate the street chase from No Time To Die in style!

I started off by designing and laser cutting cardboard buildings for the surrounding village landscape.

Finally I had enough to provide a decent village and I began setting them around the track layout I had planned

Next I laser cut some cobble stencils and repainted the black roadway in more appropriate colours and soldered everything together as I fastened it all down to my lightweight baseboard.

My final layout looks like this...

And now Mr. Bond in his Aston Martin, can tool through the World Heritage Italian village of Matera and spray machine gun bullets into the ancient masonry...

And of course, if this set had been actually made back in the 1960's it would have come in a box like this...

Now all I have to do is thank Scalextric for making such a nice product to begin with...

And draw a comic about how I fell off a ladder while taking photographs of my finished layout...

And maybe tape a micro camera to one of the cars and try to film a movie of driving around the set...

Hmmm, looks like I'm not finished at all!

There is another vintage 60's Scalextric 007 set, pictured here from Slot car Portal [repro box] but its clearly not as universally popular as the Gilbert set since I can't find any footage of this in action at all. You?
