There's a Dalek in the Bath!

I enjoyed buying and selling this old Seventies Dalek bubble bath this month. The second as such.

A neatly designed toiletry. Did you have one? Or another bubble bath bottle readers?

Always very collectable, I found my first one many years ago in the 1990's in a pub car park car boot sale. It formed part of my mail order sales list under the moniker Moonzero Toys and went as part of a job-lot, part-ex, to my former Project SWORD toy dealer Chris Avis for a SWORD toy, which I still have.

The bubbles live on.

 Been to a few places this week, an emporium in Rotherham and a boot sale in Fitzwilliam. Both great fun in Spring sunshine.

Here are my purchases.

LtoR: All about Cars by Century 21/ Corgi £2, KO Action Man (I think) 50p, two Lanard GI Joes £1 each, Kirk 50p, Dalek bubble bath £8 and a 2003 long robot vehicle £2. No idea what it is, I just loved it! 

I also picked up a Beastmaster pre-cert big box VHS for £1. Not pictured.

Take the Plunge

I had to chuckle at the positioning of objects in this museum. A dalek and a big plunger! Can we expect a really big dalek to turn up and claim it! 

It needs a better caption! 

SONIC BOON: PROGRESS ON MY DALEK DISINTEGRATOR MOCK-UP

I've made some progress on my DIY Lincoln International mock Dalek Disintegrator.

The old Black and Decker hot are gun has been partly re-shaped with thick card tubing. The threaded pipe has been sawn down and moved forward. A milk bottle handle has been added. A coke can metal ring has been inserted and a final capping with some plastic bits including a tiddlywinks pot op top.

The white topper is half a milk bottle sprayed white. Its not stuck on yet.

Some final touches to come are to glue the white panel down, add the name of the toy to it and finally decide on some repro packaging with Bill the box art master.

Here's an original toy in all its fabulous glory!

There are many versions of this design but the Dalek Sonic Disintegrator is a rare toy and information is scant. Was it an American release? Did it make a sound and light up? Did it fire darts? Any clue readers?

THE DR.WHO ANTI-DALEK SONIC DISINTE-GRATOR: ITS A LOT OF HOT AIR!

I've started my next Do-It-Yourself Dalek toy gun, Lincoln International's 1965 Dr. Who Anti-Dalek Sonic Disintegrator.

My reference point for this scarce toy is this image on Christopher Hill's fabulous Space Museum gallery. There are a few more on the net too such as Worthpoint.

Setting off, this great looking vintage hot air stripper was a steal on Ebay and I hoped would give my project a real first blast.

I kicked off by taking it apart, which was great fun!

I then started building up the various parts of the barrel. Still a way to go!

I'm still not sure how this is all going to turn out: it could really be a lot of hot air!

Early days yet so I'll not be worrying Skaro's Finest any time soon.

I need a banana.

HOME STAR: DO IT YOURSELF ROCKET GUN DONE

 My experiment with Papier Mache is complete and my DIY Dalek Rocket Gun is finished.

Not perfect by a long Dalek and I'm not sure I'll use Papier Mache again but it was fun to try. Its mixed results for sure - the grip looks like a lump of red meat! -  but it should look much better when its on a new backing card kindly being created by Bill. When the two things come together I'll post it here.

The good news is, the Dr. Who vintage arsenal will be back - with real toys this time!

HOME STAR: MY DIY DALEK ROCKET GUN

 With Dr. Who's vintage toy arsenal firmly in my sights I thought this time I'd have a crack at the classic Lone Star Dalek Rocket Gun.

Here's the original toy, seen online, which some of you may have.

I started with a water pistol.

After some sawing and re-shaping I had the rough basis of the body and grip.

I then did something I've never done .... used papier mache to mould the body into the shape that I wanted. It was sticky, tricky but fun!

Then I was able to paint it, together with some extra parts I had.

Everything's drying.

THE SPACE MUSEUM: A TARDIS OF DR. WHO TOYS!

 Sometimes you stumble on a great website. I did this morning, the Space Museum, which landed in 2017.

Despite the slightly misleading name, its a site dedicated to Dr. Who collectables and the great thing is how the items are laid out,  namely year by year. The owner, Christopher Hill, has done a fabulous job worthy of Time Lord status!

Each year of merchandise and toys is covered and the pictures are really neatly arranged. You can click on each one to enlarge and a bit of extra info appears as well.

The amount of Dr. Who merchandise in there is quite staggering. I thought Thunderbirds had a lot!

The WANTED page is fascinating too, all the things the site owner is looking for to add to the site. Maybe you have something tucked away in your Tardis?

Not sure I had much Who as a kid other than the 1969 Annual, my memory has been exterminated somewhat. Seeing all this stuff on the Space Museum though has reminded me of the few Who items I have found over the years as a collector. I own a nice book all about the classic years including a great section on the toys and games, so have looked out for stuff.

I did find a loose Dalek bubble bath at a boot sale [here's a boxed one on the superb Skaro site, which is like an earlier version of the Space Museum] and several Marx Daleks over the years. I also bought a boxed Tom Baker doll from the newspaper classifieds - remember them? 

Most of this went towards trades for Project SWORD toys back in the 1990's to a brilliant SWORD finder, Chris Avis. Chris collected Who stuff and I traded what I had with him and he supplied all my Project SWORD needs back in those pre-Ebay days. Sadly I lost track of Chris after that but many of his prized WHO items appeared on the Skaro website in the 1990's [I would love to hear from Chris again!]

TV21's THE DALEKS REPRINTED

Hi there, I just found a complete set of The Daleks from TV21 at my newsagent! I never had TV 21 as a kid, so this was all new(ish) to me!

Strangely, I remember an episode where the Emperor Dalek falls through a time warp and comes off the worst from a joust with a Knight in armour!

The episode had (I think) a cut away of his interior to illustrate the epilogue where he is being repaired with a warning he will be even more dangerous when complete! 

As this adventure wasn't in this collection, I assume the story must have been in TV Comic or maybe Look and Learn?

One of the featured spacecraft [the Guardian] looked very familiar, and sure enough, a bit of Googling brought up the fact someone else had already made the SpaceX connection! I guess I'm the last kid on the block to notice this!

Did any of you read the Daleks strip as a kid? have you go this reprint collection?

VAUXHALL DALEK BUILT FROM SCRATCH WITH A CAR LIGHT FROM HALFORDS

Hi,

Here's my dalek having an afternoon in my garden (he finds the drive too draughty). You can see the car light in the eye in the second picture, along with the blue strip lights underneath him that often grace customized vauxhall novas (novae?) too!

you might be interested to know that i spotted the red dome dalek in a William Hartnel episode

the red dome / silver bodied with those distinctive dome lights that give it away....

i think this Dalek does actually appear in a Doctor Who story... if you watch closely you will see it in the back ground of the William Hartnel story ??? 

behind some trees in the dark (its either the flame thrower scene or in one of the / with the meddling monk story) all i know is (its on dvd and its not a complete story all episode complete) 

its behind the trees and its lights are the same as the red top Dalek and (in b/w) red shows up as black i'm sure it does exist in the story but as an extra... as a fill in.... it does not move but i'm sure it the one.

i'll see if i can find out more or get a copy of the scene.....

very interested in knowing if it was used (my dad did work on some of the models for Doctor Who and i remember he said it was in one of the stories) and thinking about it he did say something about flame throwers ? but wasn't too sure.

i'll get back to you again once i watch the dvd's to find out which one has it in .... in fact i realised  its possible it might be the ONE episode prequel to the 10 episode story on Kemble which i think contains the flame thrower Daleks, MISSION to the UNKNOWN, takes place in a forest.

GARDEN PESTS

It's been a bit of a hectic week at work and as the day draws to a close there's nothing I like better than to enjoy a sit outside with a beer as the Sun goes down . Unfortunately, it does bring out the odd garden pest too!

Hopefully, that passing Dalek will get rid of them!

THUNDERBIRDS DART GUNS

This highly unusual THUNDERBIRDS dart pistol - above - appeared on Ebay in the last week, being sold in Belgium. It's clearly a knock-off of the officially licensed 1960's Lone Star Rocket Firing Space Gun (below, courtesy of http://www.vintagethunderbirdstoys/). The flagrant copying of the TB2, both at the top and bottom of the card, are clearly visible and you can almost see how they have simply slapped a Dalek over the TB3 picture! But, do you know, I love this knock-off. The dark space background is wonderful for TB2 (and unlikely as I'm sure that TB2 was earth-bound) but what really makes it for me is the juxtaposition of a Dalek and the TB2 in one place! This is very unusual and reminds me of a DC/Marvel Superhero crossover where Batman meets Spiderman! Both contemporaries in the swinging Sixties and regular neighbours in TV21, I'm sure they never actually came together on TV or moreover on any other toy? It's strange how the toy is simply called ROCKET GUN AND THUNDERBIRDS, opting to miss out on the selling power of Dr. Who in the title. The black and white drawing of the space boy in the bottom left corner is also odd - sort of reminds me of the motif in the Dr. Who Disintegrator Gun comic advert. I must admit I had a bid on this but it was a reserve item and remains tantalisingly unsold!

There is another knockoff of the Lone Star gun, the PILEN PISTOLA ESPECIAL from Spain. I can only find one image of this similarly wondrous derivative, on the marvellous METROPOLIS TOYS site. The image is copyrighted so please view it on their site. Pilen avoid any mention of Thunderbirds but have slapped one of the Tracy brothers over a space-scape patrolled by a more plausible TB3. However, it is still the Dalek version, which does it for me!

PS. Steve from www.vintagethunderbirdtoys says "Interesting. The Pilen dart gun is significantly smaller than the Lone Star version. I wouldn't give the Pilen one house room. I assume the Dalek/Thunderbirds one is a re-card of the Pilen".
