A STABLE RELATIONSHIP

 Sometimes Lady Luck stops by.

On Friday I said I wished I'd bought a Sindy horse last year in a Wetherby charity shop.

Well, going back to Wetherby yesterday I was stunned to see another Sindy horse.

A white articulated one with a big red Sindy coat up on a shelf.

Not quite believing it I glanced down to the floor and lo and behold! two more horses and these were the big tall ones.

I wuz amazed, bought the lot for six sugar lumps and took them home as Lady Luck rode off waving!

One of the biggest plastic cars I’ve come across is the Sindy MGB. At 18 inches long , it’s obviously big enough to fit Sindy in. It’s made from that greasy blow-moulded plastic like the large action man vehicles.

Sindy Incidentally

 I recently picked up this old Sindy Buggy in a Saltaire charity shop. Two pounds and a ton of fun sprucing up those decals.

The finished Buggy in the morning frost.

The aerial is borrowed from our Grandson Junior's Lego box.

What do you think?

I sometimes see these buggies in Space 1999 livery. Are they kosher or Code 3 customs?

MOONBASE DAUGHTER'S CHILDHOOD TOYS DOWN FROM THE LOFT

 We're having a big sort-out at Moonbase.

All our grown-up daughter's toys have come out of the attic for a toy fair she wants to stand at this Spring to make a few quid.

As expected we have been engaged as sorters and cleaners and no doubt couriers too!

Its all mostly from the 1980's and 90's with some vintage stuff as well. We went to car boots back then too!

We have bagged McDonalds toys.

Doll's furniture and a troll.

Vintage boxed Sindy furniture. Daughter played with them and put them back in the boxes. We trained her well!

SPACE AGE PINK TOY FURNITURE

 Even after 30 years rummaging around with old toys its always a thrill to come across something I've not seen before.

Amongst a pile of second hand dolls furniture the Missus bought at an outdoor sale last summer where bits of pink and beige plastic furniture.

Seeing them again recently I thought, hmmm, they look a bit space age.

A playmobil astronaut modelled the sofa for me.

Underneath the sofa its says Made Exclusively for Debenhams. So, a UK department store made them. In that sense they recall the Explorer 12 toys made by British Home Stores, another UK department store from the 80's. It always amazes me when general store chains like these enter the world of exclusive toys.

Alas both BHS and Debenhams are now gone or almost gone.

Here are the two space age chairs we have from the set.

A little googling and I found a boxed set online.

What we have is the Lounge Furniture from a range called Sarah Louise!

Result!

It looks like the 70's to me.

Digging a bit more I found this description of the garden furniture set on Worthpoint.

Sarah Louise was a 6 1/2" tall doll made by Pedigree in the 1960's and 70's exclusively for Debenhams. She was in fact a miniature Sindy.

So, a mini Sindy. You can see Sarah reclining on her lounger on this lovely boxed set I found pictured on Worthpoint too.

BLOWN' FREE: MATT AND SINDY INFLATING TENTS:

I've often wondered if Major Matt Mason stuff was interchangeable with the stuff girls were playing with when I was a titchy young boy in space. 

The Major's inflatable tent is one such item. Did it inspire Sindy's blow-up tent by Pedigree? Could they have been interchangeable? Could the Major fit into Sindy's tent and vice versa?

Come to think of it, the Major could have used that buggy too! He'd be too short maybe but what about Captain Lazer?

mary poppins saves christmas

The Missus and I watched our first full Christmas film on the telly schedules today, Disney's Mary Poppins from 1964.

We enjoyed it immensely and I'm sure I haven't seen it in full since I was a nipper. Julia Andrews did a grand job as Miss. Poppins I must say. It must have been hard on her ankles being stood duck-footed throughout the film! She also sang beautifully but being the star of The Sound of Music I should have known that she would!

I was however aware of Dick Van Dyke's supposedly awful fake cockney accent. Amazingly I actually quite liked the mockney he came out with. Who can resist singing along with his famous Chim Chiminy tune and not be mesmerised by his stick-insect-like dancing.

Reading the end credits I was surprised to see a familiar name, a name I associate with monster movies and not Mary Poppins. one Elsa Lanchester no less. Yes, the Bride of Frankenstein herself! She played the Nanny who leaves at the start of the film. Oddly enough, Elsa was a real Cockney and also a singer. I have one her albums, Songs for a Smoke-Filled Room.

I was interested to see if there were any Mary Poppins collectables that came out with the film. The main toy appears to have been a doll by a company completely hew to me, Horsman. Looking it up online, the face of the Horsman Mary looks a lot like the big-headed Sindy and there's even a whisper of Pedigree Joe 90's inflated features.

I imagine that the Poppins parrot-headed Umbrella was marketed as a toy as well so I shall dig a little further on that one.

The only Mary merchandise that I have is the story written in 1934 by P.L Travers as a paperback movie tie-in featuring Julie Andrews on the cover hovering Penguin-like over London's chimneys. Maybe I should read it?

I've heard of Mego greying. You know, when Mego figure heads go grey with age. Sounds like me!

What about Sindy's? I picked one up the other day with a really pale white face. She looked like a corpse!

Is this Sindy paling? Anyone come across this condition?

BARBIE STAR TRAVELER

I used to love buying and selling Barbie and Sindy stuff. It sort of made up for all the times everyone told me as a kid that I mustn't play with dolls 'cos I was a lad! I was already playing with Action Man, Matt Mason, Tommy Gunn and Captain Laser! They were dolls!

Besides the super exciting episode with the rare dress that I've blogged about before another favourite find was a complete Barbie Star Traveler Motor Home as pictured. There wasn't a box - but that was OK. All the tables and chairs were there. 

As soon as I saw it at the car boot sale I just had to ask 'How Much is the big van?'. The answer was £2 I think and before you could say Sindy's knickers I was walking off with my own Star Traveler!

Probably more exciting than the purchase itself is getting home and checking stuff over. I love that and this baby took some checking. With the help of the net I was able to check off every part. Aaah. The simple joys of life.

I've heard that Barbie and Ken drove off in their Star Traveler and are somewhere in the Plastic Rockies now! No doubt Big Jim will be along soon to crash the party!

A CHRISTMAS CAROL: ELVIS, JIMMY DEAN, A MOTORBIKE AND A SINDY DRESS

A bit like Dickens' Christmas Carol involving three 'communications', an urban legend I heard as a teenage motobiker ran something like this:

A guy buys a Harley Davidson [HD] and joins the local club giving them the bike's serial number. His details are sent to HD UK. They phone him. "Is that the correct serial number? Have you entered your club details correctly? We'll offer you £20,000 for it". The bike owner said no thanks. 

The next day HD Europe rang; "Did you make a mistake when you wrote down that serial number?". They offered £25,000. The main again said no but felt worried he's missed a trick.

The next day HD World HQ rang him: " That Harley you have, do you realise what it is?", "No? Then unclip the seat and there should be a plaque. Read it. Have a chair ready!"

He looked and the plaque read; " To my good friend Elvis from Jimmy Dean". The bike owner sat down!

Out of interest I looked for this legend online and amazingly found tons of references to it. Well I suppose it is a legend!. Here's someone else's version of the story, The World's Coolest Harley.

I have another version of this story. My own. Something like this actually happened to me about 10 years ago!

It started at a Sunday car boot sale in Dewsbury, where I bought a bundle of vintage Sindy doll clothes [ and yes, I sell Action Man clothes as well! ]. I think I paid £2. I got home and sorted through the clothes and listed them on Ebay in lots. Dresses, shirts, trousers and accessories like bags. I put the dresses up first on Ebay on the Thursday, all at 99p starts and left the rest to list on the Saturday when I had more time.

On Friday an ebayer contacted me about one particular lot of dresses. "For £10 would you end the auction?". For £10 I did and the auction was ended. The ebayer then inquired if I had any loose Sindy bags. I said yes and would be listing them soon.

On Saturday morning I had another email but this time from a group representing Sindy collectors in the UK, which went something like " That dresses lot you had on Ebay has gone. Will you be posting it again?"

Curious, I asked my buyer if there was anything special about the dresses he'd bought off me for £10. He said no and asked if I had a silver Sindy bag going spare. I said I might have.

Saturday Evening I got another email, this time from something like Sindy in Europe, which went along the lines of "The other day you listed some Sindy dresses. I don't know if you know but one of them is one of the rarest in the world! If you also have the silver bag that goes with it then they are worth a lot of money". I confirmed that I did.

I was flabbergasted and realised I'd been had but still I felt bound by the sale I'd made. The next day I went back to the car boot sale, like returning to the scene of a crime, to see if there were any more Sindy clothes. I was still cut up about my premature action. I had been going to that car boot sale for years and never found anything of real value before. I was totally cheesed off.

I got home to find another email, this time from Sindy World or similar saying something like " Its Sunday so I assume that you haven't yet posted the dress. Take my advice, relist it, this time with the silver bag, sit back and see what happens". This was the decider so that's what I did.

My buyer was infuriated, I felt bad but I thought he doth protest too much. He was refunded and I listed the two items together and sat back as suggested.

The week went by and the bids came in. The dress and bag I had bought for just part of £2 sold for £250!

They weren't worn by Elvis but its still a good story and this dress definitely left the building!
