The Blue Galleon Space Glider

This beautiful blue space glider, one which sadly I don't have, was described on the auction listing as being by Galleon.

Galleon is not a toy company I know and its the first time a specific name has emerged with these NASA 2001 space gliders, of which there are many colours.

MY NEW GREEN EAGLE SPACE GLIDER

Late last year Wotan Bill tipped me off about this elusive Space Glider in Ebay.

Its one of the more obscure 2001 toys, sporting a Spirit of America-style eagle and stars. 

Here are the original auction pictures from mac0405.

Luckily I was able to bag this new green one for a reasonable price and its now stationed in the Moonbase holding area awaiting a full check-up.

Its worth pointing out that the eagle and stars are in fact adhesive clear decals. I think that two 'Spirit of America' title side decals and two US flags should be present but are missing from this one.

You can see them here on this fully-liveried darker green glider I saw years ago on the net [in a different and rather snazzy box].

I had always assumed that these were printed directly onto the plastic but they're not. Based on this I now reckon there are undecorated green 2001 gliders out there, as well Spirit of America decaled versions in all the available colours. Anyone got one?

I have found plain red, white and yellow versions already as seen here in the Moonbase collection, bottom right.

The two remaining 2001 gliders still missing from the Moonbase fleet are these:

an orange glider

and this flame-edged white NASA version 

And, just spotted online today! Mr. Blue! 

I so want one of those!

THE MOONBASE TOY SPACE GLIDER FLEET 2023

Over this year I've at last added to my collection of plastic Space Gliders.

In particular I've furthered my 2001 Space Glider fleet with the help of friend Paul Vreede, who secured an elusive yellow variant for me being sold in Germany. As the UK is no longer in the EU, buying old toys like this from the EU has become much more difficult, so I was very grateful to Paul for sorting it [thanks Paul].

ANOTHER GREEN MACHINE! A BIRTHDAY SPECIAL

So, just when you thought one scarce green Space Glider was enough for you this anniversary then you were wrong.

As Yoda says, there is another

Behold the 2001 Space Glider .... in green! All new to Moonbase!

The livery also includes the name Spirit of America, an American eagle, a bar of stars and the US flag. 

This green version is so scarce all I have are pictures on the side of a box containing my white 2001 Space Glider.

The box sides also feature an orange version with the exact same livery

There is also a rather neat flame- edged white NASA version 

All three of these are different to the white version I own.

None of these grace the Moonbase fleet.

 These two 2001 Space Glider boxes showcase the two types of controls they had.

Here's the Radio Control decal on the box front in yellow. The control itself was a plastic rectangular unit with an aerial.

Here's the Sound Control decal in red. You can see the egg-shaped controller.

NEW WHITE 2001 NASA SPACE GLIDER: BLACK V VARIANT

 Here's another NASA 2001 Space Glider variant which I don't think we've seen before in this exact form. Its hard to recall now as there are quite a few! I saw this on an old auction listing.

I love this white colouring and the small black V on the nose. My own white example doesn't have the nose V but my red one does.

UFO ATTACK TOY: LIGHT ENTERTAINMENT

This is a strange old toy.

UFO Attack as seen on TV and captured on You Tube.

It looks like something out of Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea or The Fantastic Voyage.

It also appears to be light controlled.

Anyone have anything like this readers?

white 2001 space glider: new to the blog

I recently saw this on Ebay Italy.

Its a completely white version of the  radio control 2001 Space Glider.

Although we've seen the box before, the vehicle is new to the blog.

These radio controlled Gliders were more commonly red. They came with either a box-like radio unit or an egg shaped one.

They were made in China.

Prior to this we have featured two other white versions on the blog pictured below. I assume all three came in the same box.

2001 NASA SPACE GLIDER INSTRUCTIONS

I picked up a 2001 NASA Radio Control Space Glider years ago like this one.

My own example didn't have any instructions with it so I was interested to see these which appeared as part of one for sale on the net a while ago. I archived the photo.

They aren't that clear I'm afraid.

REMOTE CHANCE: THE SOUND CONTROL MYSTERY OF THE 2001 SPACE GLIDER

In the 1990's I picked up an orange 2001 NASA Space Glider in a box. It had a polystyrene box base and a card lid. It also had a sound control function but no remote.

A few years ago I saw this version on the bay, more or less the same as mine. This one has a strange rugby ball shaped remote control though, which I assume you click somehow to control the spacecraft.

Just recently I saw another similar Glider. This one has no branding on it [fallen off?] but has the same rugby ball controller!

Does anyone have a remote like this? How do they work? Are there any other similar Gliders with standard radio controls?

IMAI CAPTAIN GREY AND SPECTRUM HELICOPTER KIT

This is the box for the second release of the eight IMAI Captain Scarlet figures and the helicopter goes with Captain Grey. So in the box is an 80mm tall kit of Captain Grey with a base that has a spring loaded small helicopter. To my knowledge this was the last release of Captain Grey and also Lieutenant Green. When the figure kits were released later in the 1980s there were only six from the original eight.

This is the spring loaded very small Spectrum Helicopter that is on the base of the Captain Grey figure kit. The box is shown behind and this is the second and final issue. The figure is around 80mm high so the helicopter is about 30mm long.

SILVER NASA TOY SPACE GLIDER BY KEVIN D

Something a bit different, I obtained this Nasa Space Glider toy via eBay ages ago. Eventually, I got the Project Sword one, so didn't want to keep its orange cousin. I was going to get rid of it, but I have just decided to repaint it instead, here are the results. It still does the 'bump and go' thing too.

ARTO'S 2001 GLIDER: A SPACE ODDITY

I upgraded my 2001 Space Glider last year. The labels on the cover reveal some interesting facts. The name on the largest one, Sze International Ltd., is perhaps the HK agent - which might well be the same as the still-operational Kam Sze International Ltd. based in Hong Kong. The model number on the label is T2001 (where T must stand for - Tycho? Tarheel? :-), whereas on the box it is just plain 2001.

There is also the wholesale price of 6.05 for 24 pcs. written on. The two smaller white price tags have some cryptic markings: H DN/KS and K I/CS (upper), C/IS and K/BK (lower). They may have something to do with samples. However, the red price tag of the German special price DM 39.90 is interesting as the 10-89 on the upper right might indicate the month and year of the stock. Which would put 2001 Space Glider as late as 1989 if interpreted correctly! I always thought of it as a late 70's-early 80's item. What do you think?
