Penn Plax DIY Skeleton

Waiting for the Grandkids to arrive I whipped up a home-style mock-off of the Penn Plax reclining Skeleton.

Making the paper-mache rock was fun!

The scallywag glows in the dark too.

I miss this old dormant monster blog a lot. It would be perfect for Halloween reading.

The skeleton in coffin was one of my fave little toys as a kid. I got it from Ellisdons by mail order using a postal order. Remember them!

Paul's Pound Shop Haul: Skeleton and All

In June last year I discovered a new shop - like a $2 shop (British pound shop), but with a far greater selection of interesting things than most of those I have seen.

I could not resist, and picked up several goodies for future modelling projects. It is certainly a shop I will be returning to whenever I get the chance.

First up, two pairs of carded reptiles, mostly lizards, but including an alligator. Completely hollow, the plastic is only slightly soft. Length about 6 inches.

From a box full of assorted dragons, this fine standing fellow. Light green, with red and metallic blue detailing, just over 3 inches tall.

From a collection of glow-in-the-dark prehistoric skeletons in plastic eggs, a Humanoid Skeleton. Just over 6 inches tall when assembled. Unfortunately, he is moulded in a rather soft plastic, and bits keep dropping off, so this limits what can be done with him.

Finally, a clear pink plastic shot glass. I have plans for this, and they do not involve any alcoholic beverages.

A good haul, all for $15 NZ (about £7.50).

BONE TO BE WILD

 When I was making my copy Boneshaker below I came across quite a few boney bike toys.

Here's Mattel's glorious 1973 original Boneshaker.

Here's Mattel's Chopcycles Ghost Rider. Chopcycles were a motorcycle version of Sizzlers. I adore the flowing stylised ghost. Those Mattel designers were something else back then.

Further skeletons appeared on Hot Wheel's Scorchin Scooter in their City line.

A much more recent affair, I'm unsure when this City bonehead was released. I'd certainly pick one up if I saw one at a boot sale.

Like most things Hot Wheels, fans mess around and here's a really comical duo of the Rrrumblers Boneshaker with a Scorchin' Scooter rider!

and there's even more rib-tickling adoration in this replica by Hell's Dept I saw online. I'm not certain what this is made of but it looks really neat!

Last but not least in this ossifying outing is the legendary Ghost Rider by Fleetwood toys. Below's a loose one I saw online, which you don't often see, loose.

This basic plastic rack carded toy has attained grail-like status among action figure collectors and I'm amazed to say that I have one tucked away. I bought it at a good price decades ago on Ebay so that I could attract people to my old vintage toy stall at toy fairs in the Noughties!

More often than not this carded rider is encased in plastic with an AFA grading like this one on Hakes in the US. I'm unsure what exactly 60 means and whether mine would cut the mustard. Anyone know about AFA grading?

Ready: My Home-Made Rrrumblers Boneshaker Done and Dusted

 A while back I posted pics of my Boneshaker.

This is the original Mattel Rrrumblers I was trying to copy.

I experimented with different sized Top Hatters.

I opted for the big one, a repainted Lanard Corps!

He likes to stand.

Boney has too many ribs for sitting.

And away he goes in search of non-purple clothes.

These modern Papo skeletons really have that Jason and the Argonauts vibe! They glow in the dark too! I wonder if Ray Harryhausen Would have got some!?

Its always good to get away for a few days. We've been to Skipton. Yep, to recharge the ol' battery packs.

Its always fun to spot vintage stuff and old friends whilst travelling. The geek travels in me.

So I had to laugh. In our Bed and Breakfast room was this radiator dial. I immediately thought ....

 stormtrooper! ha ha.

In Skipton I also saw an old pal in the window of an Aquatics shop.

The Jewel Box Collection skeleton pirate by fish tank toy maestro's Penn Plax.

I've loved Penn Plax ever since I discovered that they released an aerating Creature from the Black Lagoon, one of the most iconic monster collectables ever.

I could easily collect Penn Plax skeletons. In fact all pirate skeletons really. Part of such a collection would have to be MPC's Pirates of the Caribbean - like their brilliant Dead Man's Raft.

Not wanting to spend a King's ransom on an original kit reader Jeff Saucerman has kindly let me know that for a few dabloons you could bag the Lindberg re-issue in their Jolly Roger line, Hex Marks the Spot!
