Ed's Buck Rogers HG Toys Galactic Play Set

Here's one of about two dozen playsets sitting out in The Cave that I finally took off the shelf and started photographing. 

I don't have all the photos taken yet but this will give you an indication of the treasures within this set.

The playset is based on the television series which ran from 1979-81 and HG Toys did a really nice job in packing a lot of action into a relatively small playset.

There are:

Three distinct sets of figures:

-Character figures from the TV series

-Space Commandos

-Robo Aliens (provided by LP)

Spaceships:

-Two brown Draconian Marauders of the Draconian Empire (the bad guys)

-Two white starfighters

(I still need to apply the stickers onto the spaceships and then photograph them)

-One large flying saucer. 

The words 'Star Station X-5' are molded into the upper hull, and this saucer is a hold-over from previous HG space playsets like their 'Alien Attack' and 'Space Wars' playsets. 

(The box art shows a blue saucer, but I've only ever seen yellow)

Cardboard Graphics:

-Seven separate graphics depicting alien landscapes and a landing strip

I've known for ages that this Alien Attack playset by Toyco contained miniature plastic knockoffs of Colourforms Outer Space Men.

What I din't know but have just read on an Ebay listing is that they also appear on the box art!

And yes they do! At the back are three Electron+ figures emerging from the ground and there are three more scattered around.

Front right is a red-headed Alpha 7 and there's one with its back to us on front left.

Last but not least is the arm of Colossus Rex front right.

OK, the illustration isn't very good but I'm chuffed about this Outer Space Men cover. The astronauts I don't recognise at all.

Has anyone got a complete set - 'over 60 pieces' ? Pictures welcomed for the blog!

MY BRAIN HURTS: TOYCO ALIEN ATTACK!

The above small grey copy of the classic ORBITRON figure from Colourforms' Outer Space Men toy line on feebay has had me wondering for a while whether it came from a game or set. Quite by chance I saw a playset called ALIEN ATTACK [by Toyco 1983] online and lo and behold, it contains none other than our little brainy friend as you can see pictured below. It's such a cool looking playset. There can't be many including copies of Outer Space Men. You can see more pictures of the set online over at the ubercool Mego Museum's Mego Talk. The set appears also to include a squadron of MPC-style spacemen and some excellent 'scenery'.

Are there any more sets, games or knockoffs of Colourforms Outer Space Men. Pictures and tales welcomed, as well as of the actual Colourforms toys themselves of course!

BTW if you like boxed sets from the 1980's there's a nifty page full of Dimensions sets at the Virtual Toy Chest [link courtesy of Mego Talk]. Alas, by the early 80's I was in my twenties and already 'too old' for these!
