I noticed these little Japanese gumballs online.
They contain small plastic toy vehicles from the Gerry Anderson TV anime, Firestorm.
There are elements of these that feel familiar. Probably the SPV
They also reminded me of these miniature soft plastic Space Cruisers spaceships I got years ago.
Have you seen Firestorm or have you anything like those spaceships?
The car definitely has that SPV vibe... And that big ship on the left of the paper insert, it has the body shape of the Nostromo from Alien -for shame!
ReplyDeleteInteresting spacecraft Looey. I guess some designs are universal.
DeleteYeah, bought these toys and the Japanese DVDs of the TV anime series back in the early 2000s. The series came out in 2003. It's an interesting one, Gerry was apparently not pleased when the Japanese producers diverted from his original plan and story. Maybe due to low ratings? The first half of the series is battling against terrorists but then it turns out the bad guys are aliens and it all goes weird. At least they kept the cool vehicle designs by Steve Begg and I believe fellow long time Anderson fan and contributor Steve Kyte designed the characters. In 2018 Anderson Entertainment released a kickstarter backed short demo film using Ultramarionation (puppets and CG to remove the control rods) which was quite well received but has since proved difficult (if not impossible) to get finance to get a full series made.
ReplyDeleteFab info Yorkie. It calls to mind the fleet from Thunderbirds 2086. Are they related?
DeleteYow - I'll take one of those Space Cruisers Value-Packs, please! SFZ
ReplyDeleteThey were fun SF and often found their way into the old blog packs we used to issue.
DeleteI was lucky enough to work on the Ultramarionation pilot of Firestorm ( I helped build and blow up the model of the aliens' secret lair ) with Steve Begg. It was great fun and looked good.
ReplyDeleteSadly, it has not come to fruition as a series, but at least I had the pleasure of seeing my name on the credits of a Gerry Anderson project.
Fantastic Mish! Kudos, Your name on an Anderson show! How cool is that! Am I correct in thinking it was an anime first?
DeleteYes, I believe so Woodsy.
