Hi Woodsy
Since discovering how much fun the old Aurora Monster kits of the 1960s and 1970s are, I have been going a bit Monster Mad. Diving down all sorts of weird rabbit holes.
Now I realise that a lot of this will be well known to the dedicated Aurora Monster buff, but much of it is new to me, and perhaps to some other readers. So I thought it might worthwhile doing a few short articles on the world of Aurora Monsters.
First up, just how many Frankenstein kits did Aurora produce ? Seven, by my count - and that does not include the Glow-in-the-Dark versions of existing kits.
All were released between 1962 and 1975. That makes Frankenstein the King of the Aurora Monster horde.
In addition to the original Aurora releases, these kits have all been re-issued by other companies over the years. Most have re-used the classic Aurora box art.
Frankenstein, 1/8th scale, 1962 – first of the Aurora Monsters
Frankenstein, 1/13th scale, 1971 – Monster Scenes series
Frankenstein Monster, 1/12th scale, 1975 – Monsters of the Movies series
Gigantic Frankenstein, caricature, 1964 - commonly known as Big Frankie
Frankenstein’s Flivver, 1965 – Monster hot rod series
Bride of Frankenstein, 1/11th scale, 1965
The Munsters, 1/16th scale, 1965 – Living room scene with the whole Munster family, including Herman seated in an electric chair. As Herman Munster is actually Frankenstein’s Monster, that means this counts as a Frankenstein kit.

Really good to see Frankie making an appearance on Moonbase, this Halloween. Nice work, Paul.
ReplyDeleteFantastic post Paul. So many Frankie's!
ReplyDeleteAurora Frankensteins are legend! I actually had the original 1962 Frankenstein, one of the first model kits I ever built in fact, and could not get Frankie's jacket to stay on! An exercise in frustration, that! SFZ
