Like Robin Hood's final arrow our Sherwood holiday has come to and end. We will miss the Westworldy isolation of Centre Parcs and it's gated life of swimming and bikes.
Before reality was allowed fully back in we stopped off at the RSPB Sherwood Forest Centre, the modern epicentre of the Robin Hood legend.
Theres lots of spot-on info about Robin, Marion and the Merry Men, including the wedding place, the TV appearances and the movies! My favourite is the Sixties Disney cartoon! What's yours?
The Centre has a fabulous collection of Hood movie posters on the walls. There's so many films!
There's Robin's tackle everywhere too.
The man, the myth.
What a legend!
Pop culture, TV appearances, wooden swords and fancy goblets.
Even Dr. Who! Not an episode I know. You?
The famous forest
The big merry car park
One of the many robin cafes and shops
The famous forest of Sherwood
And the main attraction, short of Robin himself, it's his tree!
For serious Loxley lounging .....
The Major Oak.
It's 1100 years old.
Now that's impressive!
Have you got an old tree nearby readers?
It looks like everyone had a great time. The Disney cartoon version of Robin Hood, in which all the roles were different animals, was from 1973. I remember seeing that one at the movies.
ReplyDeleteRevell did a couple of snap-together kits at the time. Previously, Airfix had done a set of small Robin Hood figures, plus a set for the Sheriff of Nottingham, and the Sherwood Castle Playfort. All were available in a Sherwood Playset. Hat later re-issued the Robin Hood figures.
Yes, the Disney one is fabulous and so funny Paul.
DeleteThe Dr Who link is a book, not a TV story, Woodsy.
ReplyDeleteThanks Mish. Tom Baker threw me.
DeleteFor me Robin Hood is personified by the TV series with Richard Green in the title role. There were a few seasons of the show over some years with a whole list of actors that would go on to other TV roles. The interesting fact was that The Merry Men wore WW2 Government surplus suede desert boots!
ReplyDeleteHa ha, a great bit of trivia that Terran. Desert Boots, my go-to boot, in the Seventies, too! I've been reading that another epicentre of the Hood story is actually here, near MoonBase, at Barnsdale Bar and the village of Wentbridge, literally down the road as the arrow flies!
