Hi Woodsy
I’ve been doing some little space paintings, and thought I’d share the first few with you in case you thought they were blog-worthy. Forgive me if I already sent you these, my mind now, you know...)

My art project for 2020 is to create 20 gouache illustrations based on 1950s science-fiction and space art designs, specifically from illustrations found in 1950s Picture Transfer Books from Japan.
The original pictures were about 1” square, and were designed to be rubbed off onto the skin or other object, like a temp tattoo. I remember loving these pictures as a small child, and I recently stumbled onto a few on eBay.
I have stolen the composition and basic color palette from these images, and am just trying to recreate them on 8x10” board with gouache. Just for fun of course.
I love the simple color palette, which I imagine was a function of the primitive color printing process used at the time, but the weird designs, abstract shapes, and primary colors just scream “Nostalgia!” to me.
The 4th photo is of an original Transfer Picture Book page, to give you an idea of my inspiration.
Enjoy!
Love these Ziggurat. They have a pleasing silk screen print quality and definitely evoke a 1950s sci fi vibe.
