Last weekend Me and Mrs. Moonbase visited the UK National Space Centre on Exploration Drive in Leicester. A very impressive site it is too with tons of original space suits, space food, personal items, Russian equipment, British astronaut mementos, capsules and spaceships. the huge panoramic theatre is wonderful, where we watched We Are All Astronomers, which I'm sure made everyone feel small. There's even a cafe called Boosters! But for me the highlight. without doubt, was the Rocket Tower [pictured], where two full-size rockets are stood vertically in all their glory: a Thor Able and Blue Streak. You can travel up and down the tower in a glass lift and there are different exhibitions as you rise. If you have a head for heights you can look down from the top taking in both rockets from head to toe. Breathtaking!
Anyone else been? I'm not the only one to have visited a space centre this month. A reader has sent a postcard from Moscow! More to follow.
I have passed by this so many times now. One day I must actually find the time to stop and take a look!
ReplyDeleteDid you take any photos from inside that glass lift, Woodsy?
I'm overwhelmed by a combination of vicarious enjoyment and sheer envy. You've got to go, philotoadia, for the sake of a poor boy stuck on the other side of the ocean!
ReplyDeleteAlso: yes, more pictures?
Sorry guys, I didn't take any shots. It was an impromptu visit and we were cameraless. There was a bewildering amount of stuff there and I was chuffed that the UK could create such a good space attraction. We aren't a space power of note unlike the US and Russia, were there must be simply loads of fantastic space venues.
ReplyDeleteYou've convinced me, Richard! Next time ....
ReplyDeletePity about the lack of pics, Woodsy. On the other hand it's nice to know I'm not the only one who doesn't take a camera everywhere.
I was recently described as living in the past so my cameralessness surprises even me as apparently I'm not meant to enjoy the here and now rather the memory of it. Don't we all live the past by default. The past is already here is it not. What would Yoda say?
ReplyDeleteI asked. He said ...
ReplyDelete"Always in motion, the future is. Impossible to see. Move forward cautiously, we must. If you try to hold on to the past, already lost the present you have. Yes!"
As my old Lancashire Mum would have said to me as a wee paduan 'Wadda Yoda old tripe Son!'
