I picked up a non-jacketed hardback copy of this interesting book tother week, in a garden centre of all places (South Milford), which often seem to have a few second hand bits and bobs in a corner these days (do you visit garden centres?)
It's an unusual book, at least to me, as it's a novel sized hardback full of black and white army comic strips dated 1962. I assume it's a digest of comics or?
This example I saw online and had it's dust jacket is rather smart indeed.

Addendum:
You can read much much more about this book online by an enthusiast, nothingbutafan.
There's some cool stuff pictured. Except for the personal armor plating, I'm familiar with the remainder
ReplyDeleteIt's an amazing little annual from 62 Ed, yep.
DeleteI never read those war comics as a kid, but I was very aware of their lurid covers!
ReplyDeleteNow I'm finally working on my own puppet film, I'm incorporating them into the production design as another Boomer nostalgia element.
I ordered a full set of digital scans online and have been catching up on some of the stuff I never did as a 60's kid.
My Ancient Egyptian heroine is flying a Spitfire and these comics have been great reference in composing storyboards for the endless cockpit shots!
Wow, a full set! Is it called Commando, the comic Looey?
DeleteIt's the Air Ace Picture Library
DeleteThe plane on the cover is a Hawker Hurricane. Yes, the Hurricane could carry guns, bombs, and rockets under the wings - but not all at the same time. The gun pods are presumably meant to be 40mm Vickers S guns, which were only carried by the Mk.IID and sometimes the Mk.IV. The Hurricane could carry two 250 or 500 pound bombs, but not with the underwing guns. The long tubes must be for rockets, but the rockets carried by the Hurricane, mainly the Mk.IV, were mounted on launch rails not carried in tubes.
ReplyDeleteThe black and white stripes under the wings resemble the special recognition markings worn by the Hawker Typhoon, or D-Day stripes. But the aircraft is still painted in the old Dark Green and Dark Earth camouflage colours, rather than the more modern Dark Green and Ocean Grey.
Bizarre.
Fascinating Paul. You do know your military aircraft!
