I was pleased to see one of my old Pyro prehistoric monster model kits on You Tube, the Triceratops.
I had loads of these kits as a kid - anklyosaurus, dimetrodon, T. Rex et al - in the Sixties and particularly loved the box art when I was a lad. I don't recall actually making the models though! Here's a shot of the series from my old Ebay photo archive. Seeing them conjures up Christmas 1967 all over again!
As for what's inside, here's a film from 3 years ago courtesy of the Ghost of Zeon.
Did you have Pyro dinosaurs like me or maybe Airfix or Revell or perhaps even the great Aurora prehistoric scenes?
I've got a couple of the Tamiya ones (I think you've blogged them before).
ReplyDeleteDid you see the Ankylosaur fossil they found in Canada a year or so ago? It's awsome, not just a skeleton, it looks like a statue of an Ankylosaur!
Not seen that fossil Kev. I'll look it up.
DeleteI had some of these as a kid.The first one I got was a Protoceratops. They are currently being sold here by Lindberg.I recently sent you a pic of a Lindberg re-make of Corythosaurus and Triceratops that I built and painted.I also have the Ankylosaurus yet to build.I'm hoping the weather will warm up soon so I can build models on the back porch.if I finish the Ankylosaur,I'll send you a pic.
ReplyDeleteOh for warm weather. giant ferns, hot humid la brea tar pits and impact tremors eh Bri!
DeleteTamiya made 1/35 dinosaur model kits
ReplyDeleteNot sure if also they made a 1/12 velociraptors etc. model kits
Also
Childhood is a taste of potato chips, soda drinks in glass bottle and plaing with dinosuars and "transformers" (and dinosaur transformers) for me
I love your metaphor for childhood Ran, quite wonderful.
DeleteI had some of those kits as a kid. They came in a weird metallic purple plastic.
ReplyDeleteTheir sculpts are a bit odd, but I really like them and have slowly been recollecting them.
Yes, T remember that purple plastic too KnobGobbler!
DeleteI had windup kits similar to those if anyone remembers them circa early 70s?
ReplyDeleteI don't but any info would be great and I'll share it on the blog.
DeleteStill have my PYRO dinosaurs, the oldest from 1969 or so, then a bunch from 1972 when issued by Life-Like. (PYRO sold their plastic kit line to that company in '72.) Currently I am restoring by Brontosaurus and Tyrannosaurus. In '76/'77 three (t-rex, triceratops and stegosaurus) were issued with dioramas called "The World of..." that came with more cave people, plants and smaller dinosaurs. As for wind-up models, probably the ones from Bandai. Check out this link:

Superb Ed. Send us pics when you've restored your dinos! Email is at the bpttom of the page, moonbasecentral ....... I had no idea that Bandai made these kits too let alone motorising them. I would love to see one walking! Thanks for the website link. Superb. Those were the days when dinosaurs really did rule the Earth!
