First off, a slight addendum to the previous SPV article, the image which describes the SPVs unique climbing ability is not in the 1969 TV21 annual, although the Battle Breakdown article is and does show the SPV along with the Spectrum Helicopter and World Army Hovertank, comaparing them to real world vehicles such as the Chapparal Missile Launcher, which at the time of publication of the annual, would have been quite modern! The actual image appears - as you can see from the apologetically blurry photo above, in the Captain Scarlet annual itself, which I discovered again after clambering around the loft last night.

Mikes Rosenthal SPV box and model (below) |
So, on with the show! Theres much ground to cover, so I felt it would be
best to start with some of the more well known incarnations of the toy
in a brief nostalgia fest! First up we have the JR21 Rosenthal SPV and
Spectrum Saloon Car complete with Timpo figures, from Terrys collection.
This is followed by Mike B's toy set in a custom diorama.
Next we have a Takara (left) and Konami (foreground) from Terry. These are more recent 2001 releases.

Finally we have Mikes Corgi (not Dinky!) model and Terrys glorious friction driven Bandai toy. Things of rare beauty, i think you'll agree!
Am I right in remembering Tesco's doing an SPV-shaped bottle of bubble bath? Ca. 1990?

Just a thought a propos the SPV's climbing position - Captain Scarlet better remember to buckle up before trying!
ReplyDeleteArto
An SPV bubble bath may well be in the mix..
ReplyDeleteas to buckling up, the very idea of driving in that position gives me the shakes!
Considering you don't drive, Wote, it gives me the shakes too ; D
ReplyDeleteBack to the point. Terry's Bandai looks like a Rosenthal version with different arials. Wonder what year it came out and can I presume that Bandai did a SPC and an Angel as well.
great post Wote. I loved my Corgi SPV as a Kid. A Corgi fleet comprising the SPV, FAB 1, UFO Interceptor and SHADO 1 had enough firepower to start Carpet World War Three! The bandai SPV is indeed a thing of beauty. I've never seen one before. Is it the same toy as the JR21 version?
ReplyDeleteThe corgi one is a modern day 2007 toy, your thinking Dinky! Yes the big Bandai is a reboxed jr21 toy for the jap Market, concurrent with the English toys
ReplyDeleteI'm amazed at that Japanese version of the JR21 SPV! Did Bandai re-box other JR21 toys?
ReplyDelete....definitely the Angel,but I don't think I've seen a SPC.
DeleteI would have thought they did --as Taheel did too.
When I said in the earlier post that someone would need to draw me a diagram of how those treads were supposed to help climbing, I didn't realize there actually was a diagram! I was kidding!
ReplyDelete(But was the person who came up with that idea kidding as well? Those treads are supposed to swing down to the same road as the other wheels, not stay up.)
When I was about eleven, we were stationed in the UK, at about the same time that Captain Scarlet came out on television. I Remember buying a large plastic replica of the SPV, that was about 12 to 14 inches in length. It was not a kit, nor the die-cast dinky/corgi version. I loved it for the fact it was large enough to "Pose" it against backgrounds and photograph it. I do not remember the manufacturer, nor the brand. However, it was solidly built and no corners were cut in its production. I lost it when we transfered back to the states. Does anyone know who might have manufactured it? I remember there was also a large, though not to scale with the "S.P.V., "Angle" fighter jet that was about 12 inches long. As well as these, a large scale and intricate "ZERO-X" vehicle with detachable "M.E.V., and flyback booster wings, about a meter or more in overall length was brought out for Christmas. None of these were kits but completed replicas. Dose anyone know anything about these replicas. I am most interested in the SPV. I would be most greatfull for any information anyone could provide.

Hi William, Thanks for stopping by. Youre talking about the JR21 range of plastic toys I think. JR21 was the toy division of Gerry Anderson's operation and released wonderful boxed plastic toy replicas of many of his shows vehicles including the Angel aircraft, SPV and Zero X. Here's a search list of current JR21 toys on Ebay UK. NO SPV I'm afraid but keep checking. https://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_odkw=jr21+toy&_osacat=0&_from=R40&_trksid=p2045573.m570.l1313.TR0.TRC0.H0.Xjr21+friction.TRS0&_nkw=jr21+friction&_sacat=0
