BATTLESTAR ARTICLES

A couple of articles featuring Battlestar Galactica in Starlog and Starburst magazines.

Conan's Charger

This large 1992 Conan Horse trotted into my life this week.

Nearly all the armour there, just a missing shinguard: my photo-shoot ersatz is Baco-foil.

The pull-strung in its back makes this beauty gallop.

All he's missing is armour Conan. Watch this space!

BATTLESTAR

I see Battlestar Galactica was mentioned yesterday, with various opinions about it expressed.

Personally, I liked the original series, and saw the film version at the cinema. Obviously, it's generally considered TV's version of Star Wars, but when it came out, at a time when I was going to at least three or four Sci-fi conventions, every year,  it was very popular and hard to avoid, and as such, I have strong nostalgic feelings towards it.

I've even still got my original Revell Battlestar Galactica kit, which I bought and made at the time.

As to the updated series, after all the hype I did manage to get through the first season, but I didn't stick with it after that.

The Magnificent Race

Paul's ace book Monte Carlo or Bust reminds of this vintage board game I once picked ked up at a sale, The Magnificent Race.

Not sure who did the box art. It may still be in the loft!

You got one or anything like it!

Paul's Monte Carlo - or Bust!

Hi Woodsy,

Here is a book I found at a recent Lions Club book fair in Auckland, for just $1.00 NZ (44 New Pence in British money). The price sticker on the cover is for the London Bookshops, a chain which once operated in NZ, but which is now long gone.

This book is based on the film Monte Carlo or Bust (1969), also known as Those Daring Young Men in Their Jaunty Jalopies. It was a sequel to Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines (1965), but this time set in the 1920s, and with cars rather than aeroplanes.

I had thought this was the same movie as The Great Race (1965), but it seems that is not so. Although Tony Curtiss was the hero in both !

Monte Carlo - or Bust ! Those Daring Young Men in Their Jaunty Jalopies, by Jack Davies, Ken Annakin, Allen Andrews, & Ronald Searle, Dobson Books Ltd., 1969. A note on the rear flap of the dust jacket states that a similar volume is available for Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines.

The film involves a race to Monte Carlo, including cars from many different nations. Much villainly ensues, as a fleet of vintage cars and their drivers battle it out.

British artist, and creator of the young 'ladies' of St. Trinian's School, Richard Searle provided the artwork for the film. A note on the copyright page states 'The drawings in the first part of the book are taken from the storyboard for the film titles, the drawings in the Rally Chronicle are from Ronald Searle's notebook of sketches made on location'.

A somewhat humorous history of early motoring is followed by the story of the film, from the point of view of each contestant. Throughout the book are black and white or colour illustrations by Ronald Searle.

The cast included a number of major film stars of the day, some of whom had been in Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines. Terry-Thomas plays the son of his original character, but he is still the villain.

Have you anything like this?

Ed's Lever Action Tin-Litho F-104

Well Woodsy.

I met with a bit of frustration trying to locate that lever-action F-104 I recently commented about.

I have one in green (as shown in your photo) as well as a silver one. Yet - apparently, I never took photos of the green version as they're nowhere to be found on the computer - and I would need to mount a full-blown excavation into The Cave to locate it.

Anywho, here's the same jet in silver.

Looey's Scratch Caravan

Here's a pic of my 1/12 scale Dispersal Caravan. It's the only finished model for my film to date. I'm quite proud of the chintz curtains!

Situation Normal all FIMO'd Up

In an attempt to make a repro shin guard for Conan's horse I used some FIMO. It formed well and I was pleased with the look so it went in the oven.

Mistake! It wasn't FIMO. It was air-drying modelling clay and melted like plastic!

Drat!

I'm now keeping things simple and making a guard out of Baco-foil!

That can't melt!

Ha ha!

Battlestar Dilemma

I saw a box set of the modern Battlestar Galactica DVDs at a sale today. I paused but passed.

I'm not well-up on BSG at all. Like this set, it sort of passed me by in the maelstrom of Star Wars, but I do seem to recall someone saying that the modern re-make TV series was one of the best sci-fi shows around.

Is that right? Any good? It might still be there next week!

Terranova47's Supercar

Hello Woodsy

As per Scoop's post, Photos to show Supercar on 'Northern Heights'

Ten Million Hits Reached!

Moonbase has just passed the ten million hits mark, which I'm quite staggered by.

I would like to thank Scoop and Wotan for their fabulous ongoing posts and all those who contribute, however small, to the content of the blog.

Last but most importantly I would like to thank you the readers, without whom Moonbase would be an empty shell on a barren world. When you read it, and also if you comment, it really does come alive.

Thanks so much,

FAB!

JOHNNY LIGHTNING 'SUPERCAR'

A few shots of the original 'yellow winged' Johnny Lightning Supercar, that came out in 2001. A later release with white wings corrected the error.

Other releases followed featuring Supercar as it might have appeared in a proposed series of a U.S. planned 5-issue run of comic books, which would have picked up where the TV series left off.

Sadly, only one issue appeared in February, 2003.

SCRAMBLE BUG BOX INNERS

I noticed this recently online and something I've not seen before; the original inner packaging card rings on the Century 21 Toys Project SWORD Scramble bug.

The 3 card shapes protect all the delicate parts at the top of the toy below the lid whilst it's being stored in it's box.

Neat!

Do you have any toys' original inner packaging like this?

KEEPING PACE

Another of my UFO TV series memories.

My old UFO poster, published in 1972 by Pace International was on my bedroom wall for several years during my early teenage years, before it was replaced with posters of the chopper motorcycles from Easy Rider, Jethro Tull, and Samantha Fox.

Thankfully, I’ve grown out of chopper motorcycles!

Platforma Voladora: the Spanish Flying Platform Toy

Further to Brian's fantastic Tudor Rose flying toy, here's a Spanish plastic flying platform.

Manufactured for J. Cortes of Zaragoza.

El Espia Del Espacio.

The platform comes in blue, green and red ...

.... And green, red and yellow.

The handle comes in blue ....

.... And red.

I adore the box!
