I see Battlestar Galactica was mentioned yesterday, with various opinions about it expressed.
Personally, I liked the original series, and saw the film version at the cinema. Obviously, it's generally considered TV's version of Star Wars, but when it came out, at a time when I was going to at least three or four Sci-fi conventions, every year, it was very popular and hard to avoid, and as such, I have strong nostalgic feelings towards it.
I've even still got my original Revell Battlestar Galactica kit, which I bought and made at the time.
As to the updated series, after all the hype I did manage to get through the first season, but I didn't stick with it after that.
That's nice. I thought the Galactica in the remake was a decent tribute to the original, but then I was never into the original, so I'm a poor judge!
ReplyDeleteI always like the look of the Galactica, Kev.
DeleteThe reimagined Galatica had more than a whiff of Seaquest DDV in it's design. I thought it was OK, but I missed the original Galactica design. Lo and behold, in the second season, the Battlestar Pegasus turns up. While smaller than the BSG-1 it's a very faithful reimagining of the original series design.
DeleteWhile we're on the subject of the reimagined series, I must mention one of the coolest battle scenes.
The Galactica deploys it's full Viper fighter compliment to a ground assault. -By jumping into the atmosphere, launching them and jumping out before it hits the ground! Seeing a glowing Battlestar falling through the air ejecting multiple planes is a sight to see!
Interestingly the stresses this placed on such a large vessel comes back to haunt them in the closing episodes...
Lovely shots Scoop!
ReplyDeleteThanks Woodsy, I've a few more bits of Galactica ephemera later.
DeleteGreat pics Scoop. The original model was by Monogram, I think in 1979 when it came to the UK. Revell reissued it back in the late 1990s and again in the early 2000s. I remember having both it and the Monogram Cylon Basestar kit. The Monogram Viper fighter and Cylon Raider kits came out the year before in 1978. I remember ordering them from my local model shop after I saw it in the Monogram catalogue. Model shop long since gone of course. The Monogram Buck Rogers Starfighter and Marauder kits came out around the same time. They were all simple kits with few parts and the Galactica front section is very inaccurate. Still got my Basestar, Viper, Raider and Starfighter somewhere. Back in those days there weren't many SF kits to be had and we didn't know of the plethora of Japanese kits that were being made.
ReplyDeleteThanks Yorkie. You're absolutely right it being Monogram. I've always had it in my mind it was Revell. Just to add insult to injury I'm posting a few photos from the 'Famous Spacecraft of fact and fiction ' later, which has the Monogram models in there, along with small photos of the boxes. :D
DeleteI really enjoyed the original Battlestar Galactica. The second version was a bit too dark for my tastes though. Your Revell build is awesome Scoop!
ReplyDeleteCheers Ed. Yes, I'm with you on the second series. There was a lot of hype, and some clever photography, with some people comparing it to the Iraq War. I couldn't see it myself, but maybe it wasn't aimed at my age group.
