Lightyear - To Infinity and Most Toyshops

The launch of the Disney Pixar Buzz Lightyear origin film draws ever nearer and the toys from Mattel and other manufacturers have begun to appear in the shops.
I picked up tow of the five or so available spaceships on Ebay, with another two on Amazon pre-order for May delivery. They are very nice models indeed, a little simplistic compared to similar toys such as the Galoob Star Wars Action Fleet series, or the aforementioned Mattel Battlestar Galactica models, but have good detailing and are a nice small size (about 6") making them easy to display.
Neither of these two have any action features, apart from opening landing gear and canopy, but the deluxe set of two ships comes with an attachable firing cannon, which will level the playing field with Zurgs Fighter, which does have firing missiles.
The ship designs have an air of Gundam about them, but also classic spaceship lines and a nice X prefix to the names. The little pilot figures are detailed and have moveable arms and legs, but are almost impossible to pose!
I look forward to getting more from the line and just hope it doesn't become hampered by limited editions or store exclusive models, like Hot Wheels.

  1. I love this Hyperspeed series. It's the spiritual successor to the Galoob Action Fleet range and I hope it sells well enough for Mattel to make ships from other franchises. In the US this Hyperspeed range includes the Armadillo transport vehicle and pre-orders are already out for XL-03, XL-09, XL-12, XL-14, battle damaged XL-15, a twin pack of a Space Ranger Buggy & Star Command Transport Vehicle, a Star Command Emergency Vehicle and a massive 20" long Zurg's Mothership with lights and sound due out after the movie comes out in June. Mattel are really going all out on this movie, they're even making larger vehicles, ships and even a really expensive Star Command Base playset for their action figure line.

I have not seen any of these models in NZ yet. Apart from the larger models, the Hot Wheels Mainline also includes a model of the Armadillo (Buzz Lightyear's ship). It is included in the Screen Time series of film and TV models. There is an entry for this on the Hot Wheels Wiki 2022 page. Mainly blue, with black and orange detailing.
