VLIX ONCARD: A DROID AT ALL COSTS

Its true, I am a bit of an action figure fan. I've been coveting the plastic guys and dolls for years.

Probably more than most toy lines, rarity is a facet of action figures. And when it comes to figures I am fascinated by rarity,  far more than say, space toys.

Its probably because there are just so many action figures around, so many people collect them, many serious collectors know everything and there are so many action figures at car boot sales and in charity shops. The chance of finding a real gem is a possibility every Sunday. At least it was when I went. I never really found any gems myself but I loved the search. Secret Wars were the figures I was digging for.

So having an interest in rare action figures I am always fascinated by what gets onto rarity lists online. These often differ from each other and change over time as figures wax and wane.

Here's one on You Tube, which you may find interesting. What do you think?

and here's Robot Voice's different list with Vlix top dog. Do you agree with this one?

I've been aware of the Droids Vlix seen above in the video pic for years. It would have been Tomarts Action Figure Digest that brought the Vlixster to my attention. I adored Tomart's publications and regularly got the digest magazine and several of their books.

I must have consulted their books at least weekly for the past twenty years!

Robot Voice's list above features a Brazilian Vlix on card by Glasslite. Is there an American version?

The net is full of his general biography so I won't labour it here. Are you vlixed readers?

What do you think of rare action figures lists?

Do you collect figures or action dolls?

UNIFORMED DOLLS OF THE WORLD ANYONE?

I saw dozens and dozens of old uniformed dolls of the world at Whitley Bridge boot sale near Doncaster.

They were literally in piles.

I can feel the beginnings of the collecting bug when I see them!

I haven't succumbed yet but resistance maybe futile. I already have the Grenadier Guard on the left and I'm fascinated that there are further Guard uniforms available like the Scottish bandleader and the sworded Guard
[this picture was borrowed from Etsy].

I think its the Action Man still in me that triggers the appeal of these uniformed dolls.

Does anyone collect them?

NAVAJO MOON

My Missus read out a interesting anecdote in her book Sapiens the other night.

I'd not heard it before.

It concerns a Navajo talking to NASA.

It may well be an urban or indeed lunar legend.

There are many instances of it on the interweb.

Here's one.

What do you think readers?

GAMES AND TOYS WITH VIDEO CASSETTES INCLUDED

The Dragon Strike board game reminded me of how many games there were with videos with them. I suppose it was a short-lived thing before video games proper.

In the loft Ive got one called Atmosfear I think. Someone gave it me back in my toy stall days.

The standard board game was driven along by a creepy guy who appeared on the TV screen courtesy of a video. Here's the intro on You Tube. Not for the faint-hearted!

Yep, it was played on the floor in front of the telly. Did you play?

There will have been more games like this I'm certain.

Cassette tapes were also included sometimes. Dracula, the game based on the Coppola movie, had a tape of eerie music to be played during the game, along with fake blood and sets of plastic fangs.

Another cassette featured in Teddy Ruxpin. He was an animatronic talking teddy. Quite a sophisticated toy really. I recall the tape slotting into his back. I got hold of a mint boxed example for my old toy stand. It was being thrown out of a toy library at my Missus' work!

Here's the US TV ad on You Tube.

Mentioning it reminds me that I narrowly missed out on a mint complete Paddington Bear with red wellies. It was snaffled by the Missus' boss!

Can you think of more games and toys involving videos or cassetes readers?

RC JOE 90 CAR: JAPANESE SCRATCH

Hi Woodsy, I was looking at your posts on Candy comic with my nine year old daughter looking over my shoulder which lead to me showing her some Joe 90 stuff.  Then this Yoichi Kawano video appeared on my feed. Enjoy!!

ODDS AND ENDS

The attached shows a plastic beach toy, painted and crewed. The silver base for the mast was some kind of packaging possibley for an electric toothbrush. It sat in a 'bits' box until I decided to add detail to the basic toy.

STEAMING MY TOY BOX

Before reading readers' counsel on how best to remove masking tape from my Space Tract box, I did try another method I thought of.

Steam Ironing!

I opened up the box on the ironing board.

I draped a towel over.

I heated up the gizmo and steam ironed over the towel.

It did nothing to the tape but it did flatten the box completely!

You'll be pleased to know that I've now invested in a bottle of lighter fluid!

MY PEN CLIP FIND AND THE MARTIAN CHRONICLES

Whilst taking the Grandson, Moonbase Junior, on his first bus journey, to a local park last week I found a small plastic thingy on the playground.

I assumed it was a large pen clip but it didn't half cry out action figures!

I immediately thought of headgear or a crown -
the X-Men's Cyclops or upturned, Magneto's helmet.

Maybe even Mego's Isis figure but on closer inspection her's is a jewelled headband. Here's a piccy from an old Ebay auction.

I also thought of the super nifty Martian Chronicles figures by Larami.

This one was getting there. The central shoot with the circle on top is similar. Even my pen top plastic is a similar grey.

This Martian is wearing my Mum's dressing gown! Anyone got Martians?

[Pic: MegoCentral]

Anyway's, short of finding the perfect action figure crown like my new pen clip I thought I'd bob it onto my recent mystery action figure cyclopean head.

What do you think?

Have you found odds and ends that you've used on your toys readers?

ALPHA STAR AND DRAGON STRIKE DOWN AT THE BOOT SALE

After spending an hour cleaning up after the dog's dodgy butt I managed to get out to the local Car Boot Sale.

Just one vintage toy stall today and a smattering of bits among the rest.

I took a shine to an old TSR game called Dragon Strike.

It had a VHS video in it so I knew it was at least 20 years old.

I know very little about TSR board games but used to buy sword and sorcery toys and games years ago when I was a full time Ebayer and toy stall holder. It all sold well back then so it was nice to see this one now. It was £4 so I passed. I'm very fussy nowadays. Maybe unwise?

Turns out having checked the game's Wikipedia page that its from 1993 and was a sort of training game for proper Dungeons and Dragons.

Another toy I saw, which at first looked old, but on closer inspection looked new, was called World Peacekeepers Power Team, a cheapo action figure series. The one I saw was a single figure carded and imported by Peterkin. Here's a bunch pictured online. They're available on Amazon! Future collectables?

I also saw a miniature plastic Big Trak for £2. They must be modern re-issues. I thought of repainting it in Project SWORD colours but realised that it would just go in the loft and fade into oblivion.

I did, however, spend a princely 50p on an old friend, the Fisher Price Adventure People X-Ray Alpha Star Alien Astronaut. This was loose, the usual way you find them. I once found a batch of carded non-astronaut X-Ray men and women and they did really well on my old toy stand.

So here's old X-Ray Alpha [picture found on Ebay]

I liked the Adventure people line as a collector and toy dealer. It was fun to handle and always a blast finding it. The feel of the vehicles reminds of Playmobil vehicles. Well constructed and well designed plastic craft. Very appealing to look at.

Alpha joins Mork from last week's sale in my box of future men.

Do you like the Adventure People?

What old toys have you found?

CONRAN TOY BOAT

In an Alien Light

Toys photographed under 'black' light. Black light is the common term for ultraviolet light. Certain plastics contain phospors, which fluoresce under UV light, giving off visible radiation the eye can see.

JUST WHAT IS OPERATION SWORD?

A bit like typing in Chuck Norris you never expect him to be found so when I looked to what Captain Scarlet's Operation SWORD actually was I had to chuckle as someone has formally asked a Yahoo forum.

https://uk.answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20170315212543AAo7xAT&guccounter=1

The second reply made me giggle too! History section! ha ha

Do you agree with the answer as to what Operation SWORD actually is?

MATTE SHOT BLOG: A TRIBUTE TO GOLDEN ERA SPECIAL FX

This is an amazing blog I stumbled over on my way somewhere else.

Created and maintained by blogger NZPete, its a terrific and totally comprehensive look at special effects from the very beginnings of film to more modern movies.

You'll find Derek Meddings, Gerry Anderson and Stanley Kubrick amongst countless others. Just look at the long list of labels hand the right hand side.

The number of superb screenshots are brilliant.

Let me know if you find something interesting in there!

DAN DARE ON THE RADIO AGAIN!

My friend told me about this on the Radio 4 Extra, Dan Dare: The Voyage to Venus.

Why not have a listen. It may not be available online outside the UK.

AN OLD THUNDERBIRDS TOYS SITE HAS GONE

I just wanted to pay my respects to a website which I adored but which now has gone offline.

Thunderbirdsvintagetoys was a true gem, a site devoted to detailing all aspects of vintage toys from the worlds of Thunderbirds.

All the good stuff was there: Fairylite, Berwick, JR21 and so on. Every toy hailing from a UK-based company was shown and described in great detail. The What's New items were always a revelation although they inevitably dwindled in frequency as new vintage items are hard to find.

One listing I recall vividly was the first time I came across a JR21 Thunderbird 2 filled with sweets. It must be ten years ago when I saw it on the site and I was blown away.  I think Somportex was involved with JR21 for it. What a gem to show online in such detail.

Two What's New items I recall clearly were a rare umbrella that was found as part of the Fairylite Lady Penelope doll's accessories and similarly a pair of rare sunglasses for the same toy figure. These were terrific finds and I really appreciated the effort showing them on the site, the only place to see things like this really.

I contacted Steve the site creator this week and he confirmed that he had taken the site down as in his words it had served its purpose. Steve helped me during the blog's first birthday celebrations in 2009.

His site can still be accessed in part, as I've discovered, on the Wayback Machine but many of the ace pictures have sadly gone.

First GACCH and now this. All the great Anderson websites, vast repositories of detailed information and pictures compiled by enthusiasts, gone. Such a damn shame! Future Anderson toy fans will just have to start from scratch I suppose.

Its a poorer place for it readers.

LANDMASTER MODELLING ON YOU TUBE

Reader Apeman63 brought this to my attention.

A nifty 1/25 scale model of the Landmaster  ATV by Landmaster Dave as shown recently on You Tube.

You can watch Dave's previous 11 videos showing all the stages that got to this point of assembly. Just click on his name on You Tube. I imagine a forthcoming one will be the paint job.

What do you think?

The Landmaster vehicle was the star of the film Damnation Alley.

Do you remember the film and the Landmaster readers?

I'M PLAYING WITH ALL THE TREE HOUSES MUM

With the help of Moonbase transatlantic correspondents Brian F [NJ, USA] and Mark J [Southcoast Base, UK] - thanks guys! - I have swung through all the trees and now compiled this gallery of family tree houses that used the same design as the Kenner Ewoks Family Hut.

Please let me know if there are any missing!

I haven't worked out release dates.

A SHORT REVIEW OF THE DELUXE CAPTAIN SCARLET BLU-RAY BOX

Although I’ve had the Captain Scarlet and The Mysterons DVD Carlton Box set for years, which as many of you will already know, is packed with extras, I thought I’d check out the new deluxe Blu-ray version from Network.

It is limited to 1250 pressings, and from what I gather has already completely sold out from Network and the Gerry Anderson store, so expect one or two of them to be turning up for inflated prices on eBay anytime soon.

The Deluxe set is actually an enhanced fourth volume, with the other standard volumes available separately.  As with the standard fourth volume, it contains a disc with the last eight episodes, all perfectly cleaned up and digitally re-mastered to Blu-ray quality, but there’s also a second special features disc which apart from some newly produced documentaries, and some nostalgic items from the sixties like ad bumpers and adverts, it also includes Joe 90: Most Special Agent, the first episode from the series, heralding Network’s next Gerry Anderson Blu-ray release.

I must add, I personally really like the uncluttered look when the disc loads, so apart from a nice simple menu with Captain Scarlet in the background, there are no superfluous newly created digital images.

It also comes with some additional ephemera which, according to what’s written on them are only available as part of the deluxe set , and won't be sold seperatly.  There’s a specially produced poster drawn by legendary TV21 artist Mike Noble and Lee Sullivan, who has had some recent involvement with Anderson Entertainment’s new ‘Firestorm’ minisode .

Here’s a photo of Mike and Lee at the first Andercon.

There’s also a ‘Captain Scarlet’ comic which reproduces the poster on the front cover.  There are a couple of pages showing behind the scenes photos from the original series and a couple of comic strips.

The Captain Scarlet strip is drawn by Paul McCaffrey, who did the illustration for the Project Sword text story in the TV21 facsimile copy which was originally included in Network’s ‘Supermarionation is Go’ boxed set. The advantage of this strip is we get to see Paul’s proper comic strip art skills in colour and black & white. As you can obviously see Paul has a solid and confident style. He does excellent and expressive figure drawing, which, I have to say, I've noted that some the current crop of professional artists attempting comic strips can’t,  As with the vast majority of comic art these days  it looks like it has been done digitally, but thankfully  it’s not photo-realistic which, while I might be in the minority here, I’m not keen on at all, especially when the subject matter is nostalgia.

The second strip, which is a continuation of the first, but this time features The Angels,  is drawn by Martin Baines who drew the Thunderbirds strip in the Network TV21 facsimile that I previously mentioned. Fans of the New Captain Scarlet will easily spot that Martin has used a NCS Falcon Interceptor design as Captain Black’s getaway jet.

But for me a large part of Captain Scarlet is really about nostalgia, and memories of watching the series way back in the late sixties. So with that in mind Network have reproduced a really nice set of glossy prints showing the series end credits artwork wonderfully painted by the late Ron Embleton, another legendary TV21 artist.

Although, some have commented that they have been slightly cropped they are still a rather nice addition to anyone’s Captain Scarlet collection.

Network have even provided sufficient space in the box (once some internal packaging is removed) to put the other three volumes for the complete package, so I guess I’m going to have to invest in them now.

Tales of the Riverbank Theme Music

Woodsy

Tales of the Riverbank was one of the genuine treats of Childrens Television.

I only saw the b/w version - in my head it sort of continued the Wind in the Willows theme of story telling.

A north American Google search for music from the show brings up the attached:

Words and music by Paul Weller.

Being non musical I cannot verify if this is the right theme music, over to you.

DO YOU REMEMBER SPACE GHOST?

Space Ghost.

1966

I didn't see it on British TV I don't think - I was only 5 and my memory's useless -  but for many fans it could be Hanna Barbera's finest hour!

What do you think readers?

Any toys or merchandise; books, comics, old videos?

NEW YORK'S WATER TAXIS

Hello Woodsy,

Further to the water taxi theme. NYC has yellow water taxis as well as the on road version.

There is no IKEA store in Manhattan but there is one in Brooklyn. IKEA subsidises a water taxi from lower Manhattan at the foot of Wall Street to Red Hook Brooklyn where their store is. If you purchase more than $20 in goods and hand in your $5 ticket they take $5 off the purchase price and showing the receipt boarding the return ferry it's free.

On a nice day it's a great ride seeing the lower Manhattan skyline and the Statue of Liberty.

Two of the attached show the Water Taxis at their Brooklyn dock.

Sort of an aquatic cab rank.

TALES FROM THE RIVERBANK: A NEW FAN

Continuing the boat theme like a lazy Monday sail, I did something special on Saturday.

I watched two TV programmes with my nearly-two-year old Grandson that I watched as a kid in the 1960's! Now that's the power on the interweb and in particular You Tube [watching old programmes on VHS with kids was a similar experience back in the 80's and 90's].

The two programmes [or parts - he got bored!] were Tales of the Riverbank and Trumpton.

I adored Tales from the Riverbank as I was and still am a nature nut. All those mice, hamsters and rats was a no-brainer. Throw in Johnny Morris's elastic voice and I wuz hooked! Hammy Hamster ruled!

Here's the short episode I chose for Moonbase Junior, GP's Medicine, which we watched full-screen on my phone no less!

They sail round in it in a beautiful little motor boat. Anyone any idea what it was? A toy? A prop? Its a lovely looking thing and the whole show was a complete delight. I think Moonbase Junior liked it.

For some reason I recall Tales from the Riverbank being in black and white rather than colour. I will never forget the gorgeous theme tune though. Anyone know who wrote and played it?

Did you like Tales of the Riverbank readers? Black and White or colour series?

KEV'S HONDA RACING MINI SPEED BOAT

Hi Woodsy

Never done a boat in a pond and keep meaning to.

I have this tiny (matchbox toy-sized) radio controlled speedboat! It works really well, here it is in the bath and another shot not in water.

Take care,
