payva and blue box space vehicles by paul v

Morning Woodsy,

RE: Recent Payva Post

Attached is the cardboard rider to a baggie that contained the Blue Box cruiser. You'll see that the three Payva toys shown in your blog piece are derived from these toys.

Since Blue Box appears to've made these toys over a longer period in time (also sold in boxes iirc), it might be they were the original manufacturers. Can't immediately recall another brand that did all four of these toys, but would be happy if another reader would know.

As you state in your blog piece, the cruiser was a popular design with all kinds of copycats. Including LP who made the familiar smaller copy in red, which then turns up in their own packs and many other brands' packs including Imperial's Apollo Moon Exploring series.

Hope that helps

  1. Thanks for the plug, Woodsy!

As readers will see on the page linked in this post, Woodsy later showed me another version of this toy. That has a much more elaborate construction, so will in my mind be an earlier version (under the rationale that copiers tend to make their versions simpler).

  2. I got to admit, I have a very poor knowledge about these little vehicles, Paul. So, it's always a welcome treat to read these postings and see pics from your colourful collection of cool vintage space toys. The cardboard rider is nice piece... I'd imagine very few have survived?

    1. Din't know about the card rider for Blue Box surviving well Tone but the various incarnations of this toy have. There's loads of them and in all sizes. I think there's a Japanese one as well as part of the 21st Century series. Could be Yone.

    2. Thanks for the nice words, Tony. I have no idea how many of those riders survive, but this particular one was lucky to have been in the Bulloch household, where they care for such things! Since Bill kindly let me have it, I'll endeavour to conserve it as best I can too.

  3. Made in Singapore, now that's a rare eventuality. I wonder if Blue-Box made much of their production there.

  4. A little more about the Singapore connection here (see #40)

It seems that Holland and Scandinavia received some of their earliest products back in 1969, so here's hoping!

  5. Anyone know what the SC stands for on the toy's decal?

  6. @ Arto: thanks for the link! That just merited an added footnote to the LP cruiser page. :) And yes, Blue Box are still in business ( http://www.blueboxtoys.com/ ), though it appears they've stopped making 1/6 scale action figures. I have four of those, which a friend had produced for the 60th anniversary of D-Day, and for which I organised the maps they're provided with. :)

@Woodsy: SC will stand for "space car" which is what the thing is called on your Ahi card! ;)

    1. Just today I got an email from one of the blogs I check, Fantasy Toy Soldiers. Their latest post is about new Blue Box fantasy figures! http://fantasytoysoldiers.blogspot.co.uk/

As for Space Car Paul, doh! I should have gone to Specsavers! [UK TV ad in case your'e wondering!]

  7. These are the four figures I meant (took me awhile to find a decent pic)

They're based on real soldiers, and what they're wearing is based on those real soldiers' real kit in my friend's collection. He also did a softcover bio book on each of them. The chap with the lifesaver also comes with a complete parachute harness and parachute, and is ranked amongst the very best 1/6 figures of all time.

Dunno about belgium, but Specsavers is also present in Holland so we get their commercials on TV too. :)
