"DANGER WILL ROBINSON!"

Some photos of a couple of models I have of theB9 Robot from Lost in Space, the first being a Trendmasters  toy which I bought around 1997.

This is a really nice toy for the money, it’s well detailed, has flashing lights and utters two phrases – “Danger Will Robinson” and “My sensors indicate an intruder is present”.

As most LIS fans will know the B9, or just ‘ Robot ‘as it is generally  referred to in the series, didn’t  originally appear in the unaired pilot, along with the sneaky Dr. Zachery Smith.

The B9 Robot was designed by Robert Kinoshita, whose credits include Robby from the film, Forbidden Planet.

It was built by 20th Century Fox prop maker Robert S Stuard, known professionally as Bob Stewart.
There were two props made.  One was a static prop, used for towing around the set, and the other was the ‘hero’ prop in which actor and stuntman, Bob May would ‘wear’. As the prop was difficult to get in and out of, Bob would stay in the ‘suit’ during breaks, even having an ash tray fitted inside.

There’s a story that producer Irwin Allen saw smoke billowing out of the robot and thought it was on fire, however it was just Bob having a ciggie break.  So any smoke coming from the robot on screen was down to Bob having a drag.

The distinctive voice of the robot was down to actor and announcer, Dick Tufeld, who actually reprised the role for the 1998 feature film.

My second model is one of four classic Lost in Space die-casts released by Johnny Lightning, to coincide with the release of the feature film.

Again, plenty of detail, with a movable upper body, this is a nice little collectable.

Oh, and if anyone is interested the full title of the B9 Robot is Class M3 General Utility Non Theorising Environmental Control Robot!

  1. Loved Trendmasters! A shame they're no longer around.Their Godzilla toy line in the 90's got me interested in toys again.I remember being in my 20's,and my money was being spent on mundane adult stuff like rent, insurance, gas, and groceries, but those toys in the window of KayBee at the Mall made me pause and say"Where was this stuff when I was seven?Gamera,Lost in Space and ID4 were some other great lines of theirs. They canceled a King Kong line before oing out of business, what a shame!BTW, just saw online today, a new line of toys for the new Kong movie...COOL!

  3. I've got both these toys as well, but isn't the first toy's second phrase "My sensors indicate an intruder is present!"? (Just to be pedantic. Could be wrong 'though.) The Robot can be put on 'room guard' mode, in which the second phrase would be more apt, but for some strange reason it's the first phrase it says. I've also got a little wind up version (a Japanese toy I think), plus the reissue of the Aurora kit (which I've yet to build) - as well as a talking keyring figure as well. A great design indeed.

    1. I've just checked the robot, Kid and he says "My sensors indicate an intruder is present" so yes, your being pedantic, ha,ha!;D Only joking. To be honest I've long since lost the box and any instructions so I can't for the life of me remember how the room guard aspect of it works. Is it a light or sound or something?

    2. I still have the box and instructions, but they're up in my loft somewhere, and the robot is in a big box in the cupboard so unfortunately I can't check either of them at the moment. However, if I remember rightly, there's a switch on the side or back of his torso which turns on the room guard. (Or maybe there's one behind his 'foot' panel.)

    3. Yes, the switch does have A or B on it. I'll have to see if sound or light activates it either one. :D

  4. Beautiful images Scoop. I think you've got that lighting technique nailed. I really like the last shot with the LIS Moon Chariot lurking in the background. I very nearly bought one of these Trendmasters robots in the Yorkshire Trading Post in Whitby where they had stacks of them discounted in the late Nineties. Wish I had now! I wonder how it compares stood next to the other three toy versions, Masudaya, Remco and Ahi. Maybe one of our readers has them all!

    1. Thanks Woodsy, I'm sure there'll be a few collectors out there who've got 'em all. I'll do a few more photos of the Chariot tomorrow :D

  5. Coincidentally, Bob May, the robot's operator, sadly died on this day in 2009 aged 69.
