After reading Woodys article about the NERVA propulsion system earlier this week, I vaguely recalled seeing a NERVA engine mock up in Liverpool Museum, years ago. Trawling through my old photographs, I found a couple of snaps from 2007 and recalled that it was not a NERVA engine, but the actual motor from the British Black Knight rocket from the late 1950's.
The Space section of the museum also houses one of the last two Black Knight rockets, mounted on the ceiling in the darkened gallery. The other is situated in Edinburgh.
Black Knight was one of a number of British rocketry projects, along with Black Arrow and the nova-like Blue Streak.

I think there's a Black Arrow at the Leicester Space Centre.
ReplyDeleteThe darkened gallery, what a great title for a book Bill! and yes Kev, I've seen that Black Arrow at the S[ace Centre during a great day out there a few years back. The rocket tower where the tall rockets are stood upright is spectacular.
