YOUR TOP TEN SCI FI AND SPACE FILMS?

I'm currently having great fun catching up on films I've not seen and maybe should have by now. Being a space nut one obvious genre in my sights is space and sci-fi. Recently I've watched Outland, Apollo 13 and Pandorum, all of which I enjoyed with Apollo 13 coming out on top. This means that Dark Star and Solaris have now risen to the top of a still lengthy list of films I've never seen and will try to catch them both as soon as possible. I'm enjoying home cinema immensely but I doubt if any 'new' films will knock ALIEN and STAR WARS off my top slots!

What would be your recommendations for good space and sci fi movie viewing? Your top ten? And how do you watch your 'old' films - DVD? You Tube? Streaming? Sky/ HBO? Other?

  3. I really wouldnt bother with Solaris - the George Clooney vehicle. The musics nice, but its about as far from Stanislaw Lems original as it its possible to get. Just basically clooney pouting at the camera for an hour and a half.

  4. ummmm, I don't really have a top ten but coincidentally I've also been catching up on space stuff. BUT I've taken a slightly different route. Me and Mr. Peabody have taken the Wayback machine (reference to Capt Kangaroo there) and have traveled back to the '30s. Just last week I watched the original 13-part 'Flash Gordon' serial of 1936 and this week have been watching 'Flash Gordon's Trip To Mars' from 1940. And if you guys want an incredulous look at the future - complete with goofy '30s comedy and music! check out the first talkie sci-fi movie 'Just Imagine' (full length movie on Ya'All Tube):

In spite of the goofiness the movie has several firsts. It is also the first appearance of what would later be most remembered as Dr. Zarkov's space ship from the Flash Gordon serial.
