Macro Micronauts

In this final piece on the Mego Micronauts toys, I want to look at the larger 'alien' toys. Alongside the standard issue 3.5 inch figures and the bigger magnepower models, the first wave of Micronauts saw the inclusion of a Giant Acroyear robot.  This large boxed figure included, like so many other toys in the line, extra parts to augment the toy itself. The arms of the Giant Acroyear were in fact two smaller Acroyear figures, with metal torsos.
Included in the box was an adapter and a large cannon, ably demonstrated here by a die cast Galactic Warrior.
The main body of the 'robot' could convert into a spaceship with the addition of special white parts which also linked together to form a stand alone space fighter.
Previously in these posts I showed the awesome Ken Kelly art for the Hornetroid and Terraphant vehicles, some of the larger vehicles in the range. The Hornetroid is a huge articulated 'wasp' which houses a standard figure in the head, has 'flapping wings' and a range of weaponry.
The Terraphant was a tank which was originally slated to be motorised with firing missiles, but after the incident with Mattel and the child fatality after swallowing a missile, toy companies scaled down production on firing parts. Even so, the Terraphant came with a neat water squirting cannon. The original toy had an open cockpit, but my enthusiasm for adaptation and customisation meant that it was quickly enclosed with plastic card to make the head more solid looking.

Finally, a smaller vehicle but a favourite. The Aquatron was a seagoing vehicle, a sort of seajet scooter. This came with a submersible motor pod that you usually find attached to boats and submarines and pair of hollow floats so that it could whizz about in water. However, I always found it looked better without the motor and resting on the small supplied wheels. I luckily managed to pick up a second copy of this rare toy and the second photo demonstrates the ability to easily augment an existing toy using parts from other sets including another Aquatron.

  2. Tip of an iceberg = divorce looming (LOL).

Gotta congratulate you, Oh Green One. That augmented Aquatron looks much better than the original.
