As Space: 1999 fans head towards Breakaway day next weekend, here's some photos I found on eBay of the old Italian Spazio 1999 board game which I've only ever seen on display at conventions, and wouldn't mind adding to the collection.
Looks interesting, especially the tiny Eagle pieces. Reminds me of the 'War of the Daleks' board game, which I had as a teenager. I later went in to make a Super 8 film with the Dalek pieces, where they did a formation dance routine.
I've still got a War of the Daleks game, Mish. It's a bit tatty, but the little Daleks are still there. I particularly liked the retro Dalek City artwork around the box. Your Super 8 Dalek film sounds great, was it stop motion? I did a short Super 8 film of Fireball XL5 taking off from Space City, probably around 45 years ago. It probably looks awful now, but thinking back it was a fun project! ;D
Yes Scoop, it was stop motion. It was a spoof dinosaur movie and featured a brief fight between Aurora's Triceratops, Allusaurus and Styracosaurus kits, along with the WOTD Daleks, a Dinky Eagle from Space 1999, and a cardboard Tardis from the back of a Weetabix packet. It's called 'One Million Dinosaurs Forgot 20,000 Leagues under the Top of the World BC'. I was 16 when I made it, shot on the floor in my bedroom. It got an unexpected public screening at a Dr Who convention in the 90s, in front of hundreds of Dr Who fans.
Wow, it sounds fabulous, Mish. You must have a heck of a lot of patience to do stop motion on proper film. I bet it still looks miles better than the souless A.I.creations that are cropping up these days. The title's certainly a bit of a mouthful, but It's no wonder you got into effects.
It's VERY amateurish and daft Scoop, and not at all realistic. But what's funny is that many of the Dr Who fans thought I'd faked it, in the mid 90s, whilst a pro BBC FX man, to make it look 'Super 8' and comically retro. The truth was, it was the real thing !
So the laugh was on those Dr Who fans. It sounds like it was fun and entertaining, Mish. Any 16 year old who can tackle stop motion, however it turns out, using good old fashioned film gets my vote.
