Woodsy,

Here are some more gouache sketches inspired by 1950s Japanese Transfer art.

Next up, I'm going to try some alien toy-scapes, courtesy of Ed Berg!

  1. Those are sooo cool Rob! They have a very '50s vibe to them and look like they would have been included in those little packs of candy cigarettes! I can't wait to see your interpretations of my toyscapes!!

    1. Thanks, these are fun to do. Yes, the inspiration for them comes from little Japanese Transfer books, from the late 1950s. A very primitive style, using process colors. Your Alien Toyscapes are coming along fine so far - stay tuned! SFZ

Very nice. As Ed says, very 1950s, or even 1940s.

    1. I see what you mean - the use of primary colors hearkens back to pulp fiction art of the 1930s and 1940s, possibly where the Japanese artists got the idea. SFZ

    1. Funny you mention Lichtenstein - I was fantasizing about how one of these images would look painted onto a giant canvas, museum-style, ala Lichtenstein... SFZ

  5. Nice work! As soon as I see vintage Japanese menko card art, I think of Captain Scarlet!
