Ed's Alien World Diorama Base

Woodsy,

My red diorama base was built back in 2012 and made from a 29.5" x 11.5" piece of shelving (cut to fit within a shelf unit in The Cave), Styrofoam sheets for the rockwork, carved then covered with lightweight patching plaster, and lastly painted.

I didn't want a gray Moonscape look for this one, but rather a red Martian-esque look. The photos show an additional rock outcropping which is actually a separate piece and removable, depending on whether I want to use it for a shoot.

The background picture I painted myself - also in 2012 - on black foamcore. It's not made to represent Earth, just an alien world. I chose blue because it was a nice bright color that stood out from the black backing.

A great photo set-up, and the orange-red colour adds to the alien feel.

    1. Thanx Paul! I really like that color for these shoots. It also reminds me of the mountains in this part of Nevada. Red Rock Canyon in the southwest part of the Valley and the surrounding scenery were inspirations for it.

  3. Nice work Ed.
What's the red sky background in the first image ?
Is it a large photo of a sunset, or another painting of yours ?

    1. Thanx Mish. In that photo I created a .PNG image with the background cut out. Then I inserted a photo Bettina took from our patio of one of our fiery southwest sunsets.

  4. Wonderful alien diorama, easily the equal of many of those table-top miniatures in the early TV Sci-Fi programs! SFZ

    1. Thanx Zigg! It was also well within the capabilities of a non-modeler like myself.

    3. Thanx Zigg! This isn't any different than the kind of model railroad scenery I do (although not very often I'm afraid).

  5. Oh, those Lunar landscapes!
They really made an impression on kids of our age! I have a couple of carved foam examples lurking around my house too. -Lovely work on that cloud backdrop too!
