Aurora were famous for their collection of fantasy kits, probably most notably, the monster and prehistoric models. Here are some shots from a later catalogue, showing some of the range.
The prehistoric scenes were popular kits, quite simple in construction, but allowing quite detailed painting to be carried out, due to their large size.
The US NAVY Sealab model seems an odd inclusion, but does look like a great kit, with panels showing interior detail.
By the late seventies, many TV franchises were covered, including the Fantastic Voyage cartoon, Banana Splits, Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, The Invaders and Land of the Giants. Note the omission of the fabulous Spindrift spaceship from the series.
These lines gave me hours and hours of joy growing up.
ReplyDeleteI love the Aurora Dinosaur and Monster kits.My originals from my childhood didn't survive, but I have plenty of re issues thanks to companies like Monogram, Revell,Playing Mantis, Moebius,Atlantis, and Monarch

ReplyDeleteEarlier this year I picked up some original Aurora Prehistoric Scenes kits, which had been put together and partially painted. So far, I have restored the Saber Tooth Tiger, which is a beautiful kit. Both the Tiger and the Cave Bear were re-issued by Atlantis earlier this year.

DeleteIf Aurora had survived to the present day, they might have reissued the Sealab kit as a tie-in to the Abyss movie!
ReplyDeleteThe Sealab kit has either been re-issued by a company called Doll & Hobby Georgia, or is about to be re-issued. But it is going to be an expensive kit.
ReplyDeleteAurora fantasy and monster models really defined a generation. An amazing adjunct to the popular hobby of model making. I completely forgot about the Sealab kit - that would have been a hoot to build! SFZ
