Devonian Days

Today was our last full day in our old stomping ground, the South Hams in Devon. We lived in Slapton for six months in the glorious Spring and summer of 1987.

It's been a trip down memory lane for sure.

Here are a few snaps from today.

Plastic ferry. I used to have one. You?

Torcross. Unknown tank.

Torcross. D-Day Rehearsals.

Kingswear, islet of millionaires

Dartmouth Castle canon with a range of two and a half miles.

Unknown navy vessels.

Bayards fort, Dartmouth

Bayards. It's in my head they filmed part of the Onedin Line here. My Mum adored that old TV show.

A pedal car seen in a charity shop. £30.

Have you been to Devon?

I think the Unknown Tank is a Sherman, but it is hard to tell.
Are you sure that Formula 1 racing car is a pedal car ? No pedals or foot rests as far as I can see. Perhaps a Flintstones style racer, where you have to use you feet to propel the vehicle ? Love it anyway.

  4. Turns out I have been to Devon Woodsy.
Went filming there in 2004 on Saunton Sands near Barnstaple.
It was a drama documentary re-creation of the D Day landings, for the BBC.
Lots of beach explosions and smoke. There were also some shots from inside a landing craft of waves breaking over the rim, done on dry land with fire hoses splashed rythmically up against the sides.
No chance to potter about in the lovely towns and villages though. Quite a full on job actually, as we had to chase the tide up and down the beach each day, so we were always at the waters edge, before our charges got too wet.

    1. Wow Mish, you've done everything. I recall that full rehearsals of D Day took place in Torcross. They evacuated the whole village. I wonder what your documentary was called?

    2. I'll have to look it up! It's funny how in this city, anything older than 50 years is absolutely ancient! These people just have no clue!
