COVER STORY

Like books, LP covers are a fab store of vintage toys and props. There are hundreds on the net. We've covered a few before on MC over the years and here's a few covers more. Enjoy.

I love this Pink and Perky car. Is that a toy or a prop?



I always liked Burl Ives' snowman but that flying Santa and Reindeer rings a bell. Is it a toy version?


Which Action Man uniform is that?


That's one cool Nova rocket. Do you think they made it for the cover?

Last but not least is this LP from my youth. It belonged to my older Bruvv. But what is that giraffe? A toy?

    Not sure if some model kits are used on the cover of the BBC Space Themes album. The Liberator on it is the main effects model but some of the background ships might be kits.

    I do not know about the fire engine, but the three-rail train could be a 1950s Lionel set, in US O Gauge, which is 1/48th scale.

    Without knowing for certain, this looks like a photo shoot, carried out in the late 70s, by BBC Enterprises, the Beeb's marketing and sales arm, specifically for this BBC record cover. If so, it was possibly carried out at the BBC Visual Effects Department's Model Stage in North Acton.
    Both the Liberator and the Tardis would have been actual screen used props, stored at the department, with the USS Enterprise, Lunar Module and Apollo/Soyuz link up models being publically available kits, probably built by Effects Designer Mat Irvine, who would likely have been allocated to set them up for the shoot.

    The ladder truck is Tonka's M.F.D. No. 5 Aerial Fire Truck from 1955. It is very similar to the TFD version but the trailer actually has the more spaced out MFD on the side but the M is partially obscured.

    The robot on the Alphawezen cover is a modern Chinese wind-up, now getting rather expensive on Amazon.
