    2. I'd love that, I am trying to collect them but they are usually too pricey.
Such things ate of an era I fear. In the opening episode of The Good Life, Tom, who before he hits on the self-sufficiency thing is a designer of plastic toys for cereals proclaims at one point, "yes, it's choke a child week, folks!"

  2. Just curious,Woodsy.Do you recognize the Shop Rite brand?Shop Rite is a chain of supermarkets that I have been surrounded with all my life.I never gave any thought to how big a chain they actually are.A quick search online seems to indicate they are mostly a northeastern U.S. store, but who knows, they might be elsewhere. In the last 3 years, I have been introduced to international chain stores Aldi and Lidl with several of each being built in my area.

    1. No Shop Rite here Brian but Aldi and Lidl are everywhere. It's odd cos I'm currently in Germany and they still have Woolworths stores! They vanished from the UK about ten years ago!

  3. Yes,our last Woolworths closed in the late 80s but I dont know why,it was a great store.I am enjoying the variety that Aldi brings.Particularly poultry like duck and goose are not usually sold at our other supermarkets.

    1. Aldi and Lidl are fab for unusual European stuff. They have German weeks and Spanish weeks. We get as much of those as we can on top of our weekly shop, which is half as cheap as any other supermarkets here.

Aldi are now quite a significant player in the Australian supermarket scene, up against the duopoly of Coles and Woolworths-or Woolies as Aussies call it!
Woolworths have almost eliminated their variety store presence and brand themselves as "The Fresh Food People" they have a separate variety chain under the Big W banner...

    1. Can't fathom why Woolies is big in Germany and Australia but folded here. As far as I knew Brits adored Woolies. I like the name Big W Looey. Can you get toys there?

    2. Oh, indeed! If Paul Adams was in Australia, he'd love it as they have very wide range of Hot Wheels.
As an aside, the name Woolworths is not associated with the US or UK outfits. The consortium that was setting up the Australian version were aware of the cache of the name and when they discovered it wasn't registered in NSW, they snapped it up!

  5. I'm just realizing the difference between U.S. Woolworths and others abroad.Your Woolworths over there apparently sell food, while ours did not. Correct?
