Here’s the first batch of small paintings I did last year, under the title Space: 2020. All based on pictures from a 1957 Japanese Picture Transfer book. I think I sent you some of these before, but if you can use any on the MB blog, be my guest!

Great stuff! Painting isn't my strong suit, but I'd love to do some of these old Japanese popular culture images too!
ReplyDeleteI love the work of Shigeru Komatsuzaki, with his every explosion including the kitchen sink compositions!
BTW, have you seen a Japanese film called "Always sunset on 3rd Street"? Its an amazing slab of late 50s Tokyo life and even includes a Komatsuzaki style dream sequence! The sequels feature Showa Godzilla and the 64 Tokyo Olympics.

Thanks, I love love love old toy and model box illustration, and I am a super fan of Shigeru Komatsuzaki. He painted everything in sight, as you mention, but I got to know him through the IMAI Thunderbirds model kits which were imported into the U.S. I've been painting for about twenty years now, and realize that getting to the level of an artist like Komatsuzaki is way beyond me, but I think that painted commercial illustrations are a real lost art, and its a fun hobby - as long as you don't compare yourself to the masters!

These are 8" x 10" gouache on Bristol board. The project was to try and capture that simple style and color palette of the late 1950's Japanese toy art, and I stole the basic compositions from Japanese Transfer Picture Books. They were a fun project, especially during the hell of 2020!
