16/12 DRAGON'S DOMAIN

Some photos I took a while back of the 16/12 prototype 'Dragon's Domain' episode set models. Like my previous 'Wargames' post, this set is also going into full production (it may already be by now) once the final tooling is approved by the 16/12 team. As the models would be photographed against an outer space backdrop, I wanted to add a little interest to a few of the backgrounds, as just plain black space could look a bit boring after a while. While I'm happy to use photoshop to tweak things in photos like editing out strings, I always try to steer clear of photoshopped backdrops if I can, which never look natural to me. As the Ultra Probe Command Module spends a long time floating in deep space in the episode, I painted a more colourful starfield as a back drop to use for some of the photos. As I was happy with the results of the cut out flat planet photos I did for my previous 'Wargames' set post, I thought I'd paint another, smaller blue version. As a few of you enjoyed the previous 'behind the scenes' shot, I've included a couple more here. As you can see see, pretty low tech - I even use an old mobile phone torch for lighting. You can also see the two cut out planets to the left of the photo. If you look carefully you can just see a cushion below the Eagle model, which is suspended on good old fasioned wires. The cushion is obviosly there to give the model a soft landing should a string break. Remarkably, they never did. The Eagle beak and the UPCM are relativly safe on their own stands.
And a few behind the scenes shots.

  3. Awesome. As much as I love the finished pics Scoop, the behind the scenes or 'how-to-do-it' photos are just as exciting/

These behind-the-scenes photos are actually my favourite, as they tell the rest of us how to go about photographing models in a space setting, without the need to actually go into space. Keep them coming please.

  5. Lovely photos again Mike. Interestingly, you support the models on 'poles' which is essentially what Brian Johnson used to do in the actual series.

    1. That's right, Bill, a rod at the back hidden with black velvet.

    2. Do you remember the episode of Clapperboard with Michael Rodd where they covered the making of Space 1999, and Brian Johnson explained the bit about rods in black velvet, with a black velvet background?

    3. I do remember it, Bill, and the Clapperboard episode is an extra on the season 1 box set too.

  6. Whats the blue cylinder lightsource Mike? Is that a diffuser over the phones torch?
