THE LOST REDLINE

I always adored the sleek car on the Hot Wheels artwork.

I often wondered what it was and why I din't have it as a kid.

Well, here it is!

The custom Otto.

You can read all about the fascinating story of the 'lost redline' on the hot wheels collectors forum.

What do you think?

  1. I agree, the artwork on HW packs was always gorgeous - like all classic Mattel packaging. That blue Otto is stunning. Ill have to find one now!

Most interesting, I shall have to look out for this model. One thing I noticed, the car on the original card does not have doors (presumably you slide in and out via the windows, General Lee style), while the actual model does have doors, making entry and exit much easier. Good idea Mattel.

    1. Well spotted Paul. Never noticed that before but yes its doorless. Adds to the car's sleekness I reckon.

According to the Hot Wheels Wiki entry for the Custom Otto, the new Mainline version is a standard Mainline model, so it should be going for the regular Mainline price, which is about $3 in NZ, and about a pound forty-nine in Britain - much less than 20 pounds, which might have been for one of the earlier releases ?

  5. Great story, thanks for the link. Tomorrow I'm hosting my Grand Nephews and I bought a simple Hot Wheels track set for $10 so we can play with it when they come to visit.
Another generation of "Weird Uncle" in the making?
