CHUNKS OF QUATERMASS

Wote's ace post about his wonderful Quatermass insect inspired me to do something I've not done before.

I watched a film on my mobile phone in bed last night. I usually read but I tried something new.

The large digestion plant on a farm across our fields gave me the final nudge to watch the Quatermass Xperiment movie. As it turns out its on Dailymotion in 20 minute chunks.  I managed 2 chunks before my eyes shut.

The central character Caroon [?] looks amazingly pale and emaciated, his face becoming increasingly skull-like in front of us. I can't recall exactly what happens to the poor Caroon but I see towering silos oozing with gloop. Cue the domed digestion tanks in the far distance from our kitchen!

As a kid I adored my Ian Allen Film Book of Horror, a softback book chronologically following  horror and sci-fi films until the publication date in the early 70's. One of the black and white stills was a young Cliff Richard lookalike with a horrendous grille-like wound on his cheek. I used to stare at this wound and wonder how the effects team created it. I mention this film still because I think its from the Quatermass Xperiment from a 20 minute chunk I've yet to see.

I don't recall this film on the telly when I was a nipper though or the indeed the BBC series which Wote saw. The only Quatermass movie I remember clearly was The Pit and like Terranova47 I was fascinated by Hobbs/ Hob's lane!

Fortunately I've managed to see all the Quatermass films later on in life and through the power of the net I was introduced to the quite fabulous Quatermass 4 TV series with John Mills starring as the Professor searching for his granddaughter in a dystopian land falling apart. It aired originally in 1979 but I don't think I watched the telly then. I was 18 and my head was full of heavy rock.

I'm already looking forward to my chunk of Quatermass tonight and I'd like to thank Wotan for reminding me of its brilliance.
