I was chatting to someone today about basketball and I remembered ... the Harlem Globetrotters!
How I loved those guys back in the Sixties. They were like global superstars. I've no idea if they were good basketball players but I imagine they must have been to have gone worldwide. The name that pops in my mind even now is Curly! He was the bald guy!
The thing I remember the most isn't the team themselves in real life but the cartoon that was on the telly. It was one of those fab animated series that graced the three - channel box. I recall it being in colour too. The Jackson 5 was another brill cartoon in a similar vein.
Did you like the Harlem Globetrotters?
I do remember liking the cartoon, which is odd as I have never been a huge sports fan and was even less so as a kid.
ReplyDeleteMe neither Kev. Non-sporty always.
DeleteI do remember them and the cartoon.
ReplyDeleteI thought the most famous one was called Meadowlark Lemon, but I'm not sure. Sounds a bit odd really.
Mish.
Now that's a name to reckon with Mish, Meadowlark Lemon! ha ha.
DeleteI vaguely remember seeing the cartoon - though I think it was more their cartoon characters appearing in other shows like Scooby Doo. Or maybe Scooby appeared in their show? What I do properly remember is their basketball TV show which the BBC used to show on Saturday teatimes in the 70s. The actual players running rings round other basketball teams. It wasn't until years later that I discovered the other teams always let them win as it was for charity.
ReplyDeleteYou know I don't recall that basketball show at all Yorkie. I always had a feeling that the Globetrotters were more a novelty team than a proper one so the charity thing sort of fits for me. then again, I know nothing about basketball and the Globetrotters may have really been the best team in the world.

ReplyDeleteBTW I'm having trouble posting these comments - Doesn't work in Firefox and a few other browsers .
Hi Yorkie. The only 'trouble' I know about with commenting is that I moderate them before they appear as published comments. This may take some time as I have to keep checking for unpublished comments. All this is to put off spammers who plagued the blog in October.
DeleteSaw them several times at the Spectrum in Philadelphia.I also remember a Saturday Morning variety show
ReplyDeletecalled The Globetrotters Popcorn Machine
So you've seen them in the flesh Brian. Wow! We're they a really good team?
DeleteI remember the theme tune as well. of the cartoon. Doodoo doodoo, clap clap, do doo doodoo doodoo!
ReplyDeleteI loved watching them on TV! I couldn't imagune how Meadowlark Lemon made all those absurdly wonderful shots!
