TOME SWEET TOME: MY NEW BOOK

I have been on tenterhooks since Saturday.

Blurb sent my new book via UPS from Eindhoven that morning. It arrived today in a large flat card case.

I was nervous as anything opening it up and like all new creations its like delivering a new baby I guess.

Toy Bunnies on Plastic Scooters: Vintage Sixties Plastic Novelties from Jack Rosenthal Toys.

This book has been 8 years in the making and this was the proof copy from Blurb, the first off the press to inspect for typos and ticks.

I can't deny it's a large and gorgeous coffee-table book, which I've enjoyed getting in the post immensely.

Like all proof copies it has thrown up editorial issues and resolution concerns. My biggest worry for a while has been the price that Blurb want to charge, a price which will undoubtedly prohibit any sales. This is as a result of the number of colour pages.

Seeing my book in the flesh for the first time has allowed me to consider ways of compacting the contents and reduce the number of pages without losing any of the readability.

It'll take some time this winter but hopefully now I have my proof copy I can boil it down to a better edition and actually publish.

In the meantime here are a few snaps of the book's arrival this afternoon.

DR.MOPP FROM SCRATCH BY KEVIN D.

Hi,

Made another Camberwick Green figure,
Doctor Mopp!

In the series, he drove a vintage car that was, in fact, a TN toys 'Antique shaking car' toy.

I still have the one I had as a child, so this just had to be done!

Take care,

Kevin

MOON BUGGY STAMP

Manama, Ajman stamp.

You ever seen one?

ESCO PLANET WATCH MOON BUGGY

Check out the buggy bottom right!

You got a space watch?

WILL'S BUGGIES

Greetings Woodsy,

I recently found these images of a pair of Japanese Moon Buggy kits.  The first is referred to simply as the Apollo 12 Go.  The second is the called the Apollo Crater.

Here is the Spacex moon buggy toy that's nearly identical to the Apollo Crater.  As you know, both were based on an actual lunar rover concept.  The Apollo 12 looks like it could fit into the Spacex or Project Sword universe.

Cheers,

Will Schwartz

BILL'S BUGGIES

Sadly without astronaut, but still a fine toy. Sitap used the wheel design for a similar saucer like toy, reminiscent of the Apollo Moon Exploring bubble car, too.

ARCO MOON BUGGY

Here's another toy with those cookie cutter wheels. This is the buggy inside the Arco Play kids Space Set from 1978. Looks like old Buzz is doing a spot of hoovering up! The figures remind of Action Jacks but what is that on their heads? Pie?

I found a an old Arco space arcade game that reminds me of this too. It may still be in the attic. It might have been part of that unashamedly brazen Star Wars knockoff line from Arco in 1978 called Space Wars!

MOON BUGGY JIGSAW

This caught my eye last Summer. I saved the pics.

That looks a lot like a SpaceX Moon Buggy bottom left!

Its a Spanish wooden puzzle with what looks like three different space pictures on each side. Very nice!

The toy is called Rompecabezas by Vermihe.

Here it is Buggy side up:

and here are all the sides one by one. Lovely don't you agree?

PAYA MOON BUGGY 2

Just discovered this old auction on Todocollecion for this amazing Jeep Lunar, the large Spanish toy by Paya similar to the SpaceX Moon Buggy.

Everything about this version is different. The boxart is simply wonderful don't you think? It reminds me of Project SWORD!

The wheels are much slimmer and the astronaut is lot more primitive looking.

And its clockwork!

The more common and presumably later version of this toy by Paya was remote controlled. Its been on Moonbase many time. Just click the label Paya or Moon Buggy below.

I've also realised that this Buggy is the one pictured in the 1970 toy catalogue I blogged the other day.

What do you think of this Jeep Lunar new to the blog?

PAYA MOON BUGGY 1

Here's a lovely thing from reader Darth - a vintage Spanish PAYA Lunar Jeep and box cover art. Its much larger than the Triang SpaceX Moon Buggy.

What a beautifully elegant toy and box! Anyone else got one of these or the Triang version?

IRWIN MOON BUGGY RIDE TOY

Check this out. Its new to me and the blog!

The Irwin Moon Buggy ride toy! How cool is that!

No dare shown but it looks very 1960's.

What do you think of it?

Currently on Ebay for a lot of money!
