Does anyone else recall Fraser Hines in early Doctor Who TV episodes?
He was one of the assistants. I think he went on to star in Emmerdale or similar.
I always assumed it was Fraser's character on the cover of one of my Dr.Who annuals. 1969. He was scottish I think and wore a tartan kilt. I did love that annual. Did you?
He was companion to the second Doctor for most of his era. He also appeared in the 20th anniversary special and again in a sixth doctor story. His character was a jacobite fighter called Jaimie McCrimmon. I believe Hines now provides the voice of the second doctor in audio adventures!
ReplyDeleteJacobite? What, was he a time traveller Kev?
DeleteNo, the Doctor picked him up when he visited Scotland in that time period.
DeleteFraser Hines was pared with Wendy Padbury as companions to the second Doctor. His kilt was longer than the hem of her skirts and at some point there was an altogether too long sequence of Wendy climbing a rope ladder. From then on the level of stories suffered, the next Doctor being earth bound followed by a production team that just made fun of the charactor.
ReplyDeleteWendy Padbury was a runner up in a TV talent show, the blonde actress that won as far as I know didn't appear on TV again. She also was on Emmerdale Farm with Fraser Hines.
Fascinating Terran. I've never seen Emmerdale on the telly although I once got lost and ended up in the village where it used to be filmed, Esholt near Leeds. Speaking of Leeds and TV, Follifoot is half an hour away from Esholt. Remember Follifoot?
DeleteI only knew Follifoot fron the comic strip in Look-In
DeleteI've still got the annual, Woodsy. It's a fave, although the cover's a bit misleading as there are no Cyberman stories inside. The only reference being a head/shoulder illustration on the third page, along with a Yeti :)
ReplyDeleteOh... and of course the back cover with three frames featuring Cybermen and Yeti
DeleteA brilliant annual Tone and I sort of recall the rear cover too. Wish I still had my old books like this! Did the good Doctor fight yetis then?
DeleteThe Yeti were robots activated when a metalic sphere joined with them. The second Doctor episodes were playing when I was in Art School. One of the other students was a daughter of Sydney Newman, the creator of Dr Who. After the first episode played showing the metalic sphere rolling along the ground someone rolled a plastic ball accross the art studio floor past her and we all fell about laughing at her reaction.
DeleteRobot yetis eh! Thats a great story about Sydney Newman. Do you think she influenced the storylines at all?
DeleteI'm a bit confused here Woodsy.
ReplyDeleteHow come you don't seem to know much about the Troughton era of Dr Who ?
Were you not a fan as a kid ?
Mish.
I just don't remember Mish. Memory like cheese when it comes to my early childhood. I just remember my toys and books!
DeleteAh, I see.
ReplyDeleteDifferent focus I guesse, Woodsy.
All about TV for me, even more than toys. And as for books, forget it (if you'll forgive the pun)!
If it didn't have pictures in it, I wasn't interested.
Had a good 'reading age', but considered it a chore.
Still struggle to get through a novel, to be honest.
Mish.
I reckon Guy N. Smith's Night of the Crabs would turn you on to novels Mish! At least trashy horror novels! My favourites! As for TV, it always amazes me that there were so many fab programmes on just 3 channels back then. Now we have dozens of them and its all dross in my honest opinion!
DeleteMish, you were the ideal candidate for Classics Illustrated comics. They started in the US in the late 40's and were issued in the UK. My introduction to War of the Worlds, Jules Verne SF and The Red Badge of Courage were via these comics.
DeleteIn school a set book one term was Macbeth. I couldn't make head or tail of the plot until reading the Classic Illustrated version.
Know what you mean Woodsy, but try 'The Expanse' on Netflix, if you have it.
ReplyDeleteGood, honest sci fi set in a future colonised Solar System, with a detective story to boot.
Mish.
Not got Netflix Mish. Got Amazon Prime for 3 weeks. I do struggle with series though. I'm a film man I'm afraid.
DeleteActually enjoying PREACHER on Amazon Prime Mish. A Series!
