I do like this large 1/6 vintage spaceman, Woodsy. He's often overlooked and largely overshadowed by Mattel's comprehensive Matt Mason range. McDare's a difficult astronaut to find with an undamaged space suit. The clear plastic helmet visor being particularly prone to damage :)
Good point, Woodsy ! I actually can't say I've ever seen any repro or replacement parts for McDare, other than perhaps the repro box for the figure. I'd imagine there's an untapped market desperately waiting for replacement helmet visors though :)
Yep, you're right, Woodsy. His product box showed McDare in a period spacesuit. The image was a tad misleading, unless kids or parents took the time to read the blurb on the box which said he was dressed in a blue jump suit. I can imagine some hyped-up kid opening the box on Xmas day, expecting to have a ready-to-go action astronaut, and there was McDare in his Earth-bound blue jump suit. Little wonder Matt Mason won the Space Race :)
Gilbert produced a handful of carded McDare accessory sets which could be purchased separately to kit out their man in space, Woodsy. The space suit is one of the larger sets. Although simple in design, I think it still has a strong space-age aesthetic going on :)

ReplyDeleteAre you able to get replacement or repro parts for the McDare Tone?

Did Moon come in a plain set of overalls in the box with non-space accessories too Tone?

ReplyDeleteAfter googling Moon McDare I thought this was the case Tone. So how did you get the space suit? An accessory set?

Thanks Tone. I never had a Moon. Nor a Johnny Apollo for that matter. Strictly Mason in Chez Woods 1968!
