space angels made flesh

Ever since first seeing a sixties Space Angel board game in my Desi Scarpone Board Games Schiffer book I was impressed by the naturalistic human forms used by the artist.

It almost seemed adult-themed and unlike anything else I've seen from the period in the mid-Sixties.

I assume that the board game box art was by the original TV production artists Alex Toth and Sal Trapani. I adore the no-holds-barred shapely figures they gave the Starduster crew.

In particular the female pilot Crystal Mace was given almost pulp-cover curves with her figure-hugging suit. For some reason it makes me think of French sci-fi comic art.

The tight-suited cartoony style reminds me of the ACE book cover astronauts illustrated by our friend Ed Valigursky as seen in ...

Mayday Orbit

and the Secret Martians

I suppose the modern reincarnation of this pulpy style are the two new toy astronauts from the Four Horsemen Outer Space Men, the Matt Mason-like Jack Astronaut .....

Do you know of any other pulpy space games or toys?

  1. Hiya Woodsy. A couple of years ago bbi released 1/6 scale Cy Girls 'Aurora'. This female action figure has a futuristist/pulpy retro look. Her space helmet is influenced by iconic Forbidden Planet robot, Robbie. Aurora's not so much a kids toy, but an interesting one for the grown up kid :)
