ED STRAKER'S CAR BARES ALL

I've just stripped the paint off a tarnished mustard coloured Dinky Ed Straker's Car in preparation to giving it a more accurate bronzed coloured Code 3 make over.

Once I'd got it back to bare metal and given it a going over with wire wool, I thought it looked quite appealing, so before I get to work covering it with grey primer I thought I'd take a few snaps and see what it would look like in a hastily put together diorama.

Although, the most common finish is metallic gold, followed by the slightly less common mustard colour , I'm led to believe that a few chrome versions  found their way onto the market. I have to admit don't think it's a bad look.

This was the donor car prior to the encounter with the paint stripper. Next time you see it should be a nice metallic bronze.

  1. Nice. It would've looked quite good in silvery-grey. I'm sure the chassis donor car (Zodiac or Zephyr?) on the prop car was available in that colour!

    1. You're right, it doesn't look too bad in that colour, Kev. One of the three original prop cars from 'Journey to the far side of the Sun' was painted silver overall and looked pretty good, but I have to admit I'm not that keen on the long pink one, generally used by Foster.

  2. Even your hasty dioramas look good Scoop! Superb! Do you think Code 3'ing has become more popular in the last few years?

    1. Thanks Woodsy. Code 3 stuff is pretty popular these days, which makes buying old Dinky toys a bit tricky if you're one of those people who are looking for mint and boxed. A case of Buyer beware I guess. I'd rather buy a battered version that hasn't been messed with than buy something someone else has worked on and messed up!
A well done code 3 can breathe new life into a battered old model, and there's plenty of repro bits to get that perfect finish.

  3. Hi Scoop,

Could you tell me what paint you use for die-casts, I'm thinking of doing a little restoration work.

    Thanks,

    Andy B.

    1. Hi Andy, I generally use what sprays Halfords have got. It's usually acyclic which dries pretty quick. After priming and once the final coats are well dry (I leave it for a few days) finish everything off with a protective sealer.

  5. I agree that the car looks really good in bare silver! Do you know exactly what scale these Dinky toys are? I guessed at 1:43 but it doesn't seem quite right.

The reason for asking is I'm just starting to make these in 1:32 scale and I want to get the size correct.
