The other day I noticed that the small silvery ray gun in the Major Matt Mason range is more or less the same as the one used by the Tracy Brothers in the original series of Thunderbirds.
No idea but I imagine they saw the design and liked it enough to "borrow" it. The MMM rifle is based off the Roto-Jet gun from Lost In Space, right down to the red disk on the end (which on the Roto-Jet toy was a spinning ring that was launched off).
Thunderbirds first aired in September 1965 and Major Matt appeared in 1967 so yes, the Tracy Brothers pistol migrated stateside. I loved the Major's mini Roto Jet Gun and all of those cool chromed tools like the spanner and the screwdriver. So many gorgeous little accessories!
