spanish liquorice anyone?

Of all the liquorice sweets I loved as a nipper in the Sixties it 'twas Spanish I loved the most.

Even more than those liquorice Catherine wheels, Spanish were simply delicious.

Now I,m not talking about any old liquorice stick that you dabbed into Sherbert or Kali.

No, Spanish were shaped like an oar because one end was flattened. There may have even been something embossed on the flattened end.

They were tough too, often requiring several sawing bites to shear off a bit. Imagine sugared Lino and how long they'd last.

They lasted a while and resulted in a sweet claggy taste in the mouth.

Not sure why they were called Spanish.
