did you get toys when you were ill?

I'm currently recovering from a bout of cold and flu, man flu as my Missus calls it!

Being laid up last week reminded me of being ill as a kid although my childhood sicknesses were often nasty diseases peculiar to be being a child.

These included chicken pox, measles and mumps.

Such ailments required time off school - yay! - and sometimes hospitalisation - ouch!

The one good thing about a stay in the kids infirmary were gifts and especially toys.

I recall vividly getting a zeroid in hospital. It was one whose plastic box doubled as a trailer. I loved that robot and it often brought me grapes and lucozade!

I'm sure there were other toys prescribed with my medicine but I can't think of any more.

Did you get gifts when you were ill as a kid readers?

  1. I used to get really bad tonsilitis as a kid but my gp was reluctant to remove my tonsils. On one occasion when I was bad with it, Mum bought me a corgi MGB Gt car and I've still got it (and my tonsils by the way).

  3. In 1973 I had the only surgery Ive ever had in my life.I was 5 and very scared. The day I left the hospital, My dad took me to a huge toy store called Kiddie City.He bought me the GI Joe Search for the Mummy's tomb playset. What a fantastic toy, cheered me up immediately.I still have the mummy from that set and Ill keep it forever, now that dear old dad has passed on.

    2. What a lovely memory Brian. Toys are powerful things. They seem to connect us to lost loved ones like few other things can. That's a set I never had. I think Kiddie City may be in John Marshall's book on collecting action figures. I'll have to check.

  4. After a visit to the dentist I was taken to the toy shop to choose a small plastic Wiking car for the H0 train set. Don't think I got anything just for being sick at home (except extra time to read, build model kits or play with the Lego or the train set :)
