Dapol Marx Dalek

Of all the Dalek toys none is more iconic than the Marx Dalek.

This most remembered toy appeared in 1964 as 'Dalekmania' began to take hold of Britain, spearheading a 'Dalek Christmas'.

The first to be released was the silver 'Tricky Action' Dalek, followed by the black version released in 1965.

This is the Dapol version, released much later, but re-using the original Marx moulds.

  1. Personally, I cant get enough toy daleks, they were so much a part of my childhood. I had a black Marx one, which I found in a old shop. I made new arms for it and eventually swapped it at the Bluecoat Comic Fair for a boxed SWORD Scramble Bug!

  2. One thing in favour of toy daleks, they are a lot easier to store and display than a full size one. I'm enjoying having space whilst mine is on holiday at Spaceport.
Old dalek toys are far less accurate than modern ones, yet they are far more evocative of their era, or is that just my age?

  3. Wel much as I like the accuracy of the new models, the old Marx variants have a wonderful charm about them, for all their innacuracy. Anyone got a Swoppet one?

  4. Yes, I must say I love the old Dalek toy design, and the way they were depicted in comics and annuals at the time.

  6. You may find this post interesting: http://kidr77.blogspot.com/2012/09/the-marx-dalek-approved-and.html - it deals with the 'accuracy' of the Marx Dalek.

Regarding the early version of the Marx Bump 'n' Go Dalek, it had a thicker waist and big red eyeball. At some stage, Marx thinned down the waist and made the eyepiece slightly more accurate. It was this 2nd version that Dapol re-released, although the mechanism was changed. At first, Dapol's version had two lights (as opposed to the single replaceable bulb in the Marx version) loosely draped over a bit of waste plastic randomly positioned inside. I suggested a 'stand' for the lights, which Dapol incorporated in later releases. (I'd already made my own.)

I've since managed to purchase two original working Marx Daleks to keep the Dapol ones company.

    1. This post is a bit old now, but do you know how to disassemble the Dalpol Marx copy of the Dalek. ?? It appears to be glued together!
