BLUE SHIELD LEM AND ASTRONAUTS

For a long long time I have been after a bag of Blue Shield astronauts and a LEM. Well, this month I was lucky enough to snaffle a set on Ebay US. American in origin, the set consists of a squadron of miniature yellow and grey astronauts a la SpaceX/ Golden Astronaut/ LP, together with a lovely white LEM complete with US flag. The astronauts are about a half inch tall and marked 'Hong Kong'.

The set is called 'Apollo Capsule' and was made in Hong Kong for Blue Shield aka Great Southern Corporation, Memphis, Tennessee, 38162. It cost all of 10 cents back in the dimestores of Sixties America! [I've forgotten to photograph the bag and header card! Doh!]

The little astronauts are the same size as the pair which came in a Canadian dimestore bag of astronauts and a helicopter. The whole family is pictured here. What do you think?

Anyone else got any miniature LP astronauts around the half inch mark? Are there even smaller ones out there?

  2. Very cool indeed. I remember owning a set of these, but mine also came with a really strange F 16 jet with four wings in an x configuration.

  3. Hmm, I may have seen one of those jets RP but in a baggie on its own. I shall have a look.

Half an inch, that is really tiny. Much smaller than the Airfix set. Never had any astronaut toys when little, although I now have a few diecast spacecraft and SF models. Trying to figure out what the green helicopter in the background is, an early Bell UH-1 Iroquois, with the short fuselage ? Is the little silver fellow waving a pistol ?

    1. Yep Paul. That's an LP Spaceman. You can catchup with LP using the LP label below the post or at the bottom of the page.
