Recent finds in the search for the Spacex LAMA and ATS source art and favourable comments from friends and readers have spurred me on to have another look at one more Spacex toy - the possible origin of the beautiful Spacex Lunar Orbiter backing card art [seen below.]

As I found the last time I tried this, the internet is chock-ful of images of the Lunar Orbiter 1, a situation completely the opposite of the elusive LAMA and the ATS. A real NASA vehicle and mission the Orbiter struck a chord around the world and its no wonder that Tri-ang Rovex Pippin chose it as part of the SpaceX II range. The distinctive four-panel unmanned probe appeared in adverts, on stamps, postcards, stickers, in books and toys as you can see from this gallery. Pinpointing a likely source for the SpaceX art is, as a result, difficult. If I had to pick any possible contenders from this batch it would be the small image, second from the top, I found on a French match label currently on Ebay, largely because of the similar angle the Orbiter has to the SpaceX version. For good looks I would have to go for the Burundi stamp immediately below. It would have made excellent backing card art! Given the obvious popularity of the Orbiter I'm still surprised that there don't appear to be many other toys, if any, beyond SpaceX. It maybe a different matter for models, should anybody know?
