Toting Metal

Once more im back on the Tonka wagon, this time to look at a brief incursion to the pocket sized car world. Tonka Totes were an attempt by Tonka to create a line of small fast cars that could be carried around easily. To this end, they all came with a small belt clip and holder. The series was short lived and rather than go for the pressed steel manufacture, they have a metal base and a plastic body. The wheels took a hint from Hot Wheels and have special nylon bearings to make the rubber tyres run faster. The reason they got my interest is they opted for a futuristic look to some of the trucks and also a unique style to the cars. (Special thanks to George K for the catalogues!)

  1. Nice display pics too Wotan. Placing the Matchbox MEGA-Rig figures along with these gives me a much better idea to size/scale for these little jewels.

  2. PS. The canopy of the first 3 trucks looks as if it will open up...is this the case?

  3. no - this is my only complaint really, but i think as they are Tonka, they were looking at strength and durability as opposed to functionality.
